The opening of “Gods of Egypt” at the box office may have left Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. feeling like it was visited by a plague of locusts.
The big budget action-adventure film, created in hopes of spawning a new franchise for the studio whose blockbuster “Hunger Games” series recently ended, flopped at the box office, opening to just $14 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates. That’s a very weak start for a movie that cost $140 million to produce.
