Bella Heathcote gets into the character of troubled Leila Williams and reveals bloodied bandages around her wrists as she films Fifty Shades Darker 

Australian actress Bella Heathcote has begun filming opposite Jamie Dornan in her role as Leila Williams in Fifty Shades Darker.

And after dying her hair a deep chocolate brown, the 28-year-old continued to assume the troubled character of Christian Grey's ex lover in the film.

The former Neighbours star revealed bloodied bandages around her wrists while on the set in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

With makeup shaded underneath her eyes to make her look gaunt, the now-brunette sobbed into her hand during the shoot.

The character of Leila was not featured in the first installment of the film trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey, but does appear in the book.

While Christian and Ana are away on a romantic trip, Leila breaks into Christian's apartment is rushed to hospital after she self-harms in front of his housekeeper Mrs Jones.

A former submissive of the businessman, she is also described as 'stalking' Anastasia Steele - played by Dakota Johnson - and slashes the tires of her car. 

Bella broke into Hollywood with her role in Tim Burton's 2012 horror comedy Dark Shadows, will also Oscar winner Kim Basigner for the drama set for release in 2017.

As the second installment of the highly lucrative adaptations of E.L. James' erotic novel trilogy of the same name, Fifty Shades Darker picks up three days after the first novel finishes.

It is understood the final film in the trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed, will be shot back-to-back, and James Foley has replaced Sam Taylor-Johnson as director. 

Bella is most known in her home country in the recurring role of Amanda Fowler in the long-running Australian soap Neighbours.

She shot to stardom quickly when she was selected by Tim Burton to play Victoria Winters and Josette du Pres in his gothic comedy Dark Shadows alongside Johnny Depp in 2012.
