'I didn't understand the gravity until I was pregnant': Kelly Clarkson reveals she only realised the impact of her father's absence after becoming a mom

She has accepted the fact that the relationship with her father will never be salvageable.

But Kelly Clarkson never realised how much of an emotional impact her absentee parent had on her until she became a mother.  

'I don't think I knew how much that affected me until writing Piece By Piece,' the 33-year-old singer revealed during On Air With Ryan Seacrest.

'I definitely didn't know how it would affect me like it does when I sing it live because that's not fun,' Kelly explained. 'It's awesome but it's kind of sad that so many relate to this song.'

The hit song Piece by Piece that brought everyone to tears when she performed it live on American Idol was inspired by the difficult relationship with her dad, Stephen Clarkson. 

The Grammy Award-winning singer's father divorced her mother, Jeanne Ann when Kelly was just six.

Clarkson decided to write the raw track after watching her husband, Brandon Blackstock, 39, care for their 20-month-old daughter, River Rose.

The Miss Independent hitmaker - who has an older brother and sister, and two younger half-siblings - then realised what she missed out on in her own childhood.

She said during the interview: 'Watching my husband love on his daughter all the time, you know, go to her events and just be there and be present is, like, hard to watch but beautiful to watch.'

'I know that my kids are going to have that... I don't even think I understood the gravity of [my relationship with my father] until I was pregnant.'

She continued: 'I was like, "I cannot imagine not seeing this kid to his or her full potential and just seeing what she's going to do, what she's going to be like."'

However, the former American Idol winner is adamant she doesn't hold a grudge against her father for his decisions. 

But after trying to repair their relationship she accepts there's nothing worth salvaging between them.

'I'm 33 years old, I'm a grown woman,' she said. 'But it's more of that thing where you can try your hardest to salvage relationships, and I did.

'But at the end of the day, if you keep getting hurt by someone because they just don't know how to properly love people, it's just not worth it.'

Kelly added: 'It's not worth the strain in your heart and it starts to bleed into your other relationships and it becomes super dysfunctional.'

Kelly began dating Brandon in February 2012 and the couple married the following year in October 2013.

Brandon has a son and daughter from a previous marriage, and the pair welcomed their first child together in June 2014.

This past August, Clarkson announced she is pregnant with her second child during a concert in Los Angeles and revealed the baby will be a boy in October.
