Almost 20 years after Martin Bryant perpetrated Australia's worst mass killing in what became known as the Port Arthur massacre, previously unseen footage of him on the rampage has been unearthed. The video footage shows Bryant, then a 28-year-old deranged misfit, walking in a car park near the water's edge at Port Arthur, the eerie former convict settlement 90km south of Hobart.

Australian London Olympics silver-medallist rower Sarah Tait (centre and left) died on Thursday morning aged 33 after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in March 2013. Tait captained Australia's rowing team at the Beijing Olympics and was in the women's eight when Sally Robbins famously stopped rowing before the finish of the final in Athens 2004 (top right). The West Australian also won a gold and silver medal at the 2005 World Rowing championships, as well as a bronze in the same competition in 2011. Tait, who is survived by her senior national coach husband Bill and two children,stepped away from rowing in February 2014 to fight the disease.

A lesbian couple who prolonged their engagement in a hope gay marriage would be legalised in Australia have decided they could not wait any longer and held a commitment ceremony in front of family and friends. After eight years together and a 16-month engagement, Christie Blake (pictured in wedding dress) and Carly Finch (left), both 27, held a ceremony near their home at Narrabeen lagoon in Sydney's north last month, but are still frustrated their commitment is not recognised legally.

Manfred Fritz Bajorat, 59, who was found dead on his yacht off the coast of the southern Philippines last Friday, died from a heart attack just one week before his mummified corpse (right) was discovered, an autopsy has revealed. The veteran seaman was found dead on his 40-foot long vessel by two fishermen last Friday, with his mummified body discovered hunched over a table in the yacht's main cabin. It was not known at the time how he died, but police confirmed today that an autopsy had revealed he suffered a heart attack about seven days prior to his body being discovered. Mr Bajorat (inset) left his native Germany two decades ago and spent the last 20 years of his life sailing around the world having lost his long-time wife Claudia (inset left) several years ago.

George Pell says it was a 'disastrous coincidence' that five pedophile priests ended up at St Alipius Boys' School in Victoria in the 1970s, including notorious pedophile priest Father Gerald Ridsdale. Edward Dowlan, who the royal commission has heard evidence about this week, was also teaching at St Alipius alongside Robert Best, Stephen Farrell and Gerald Fitzgerald in 1971. One of the victims was Philip Nagle, now 50, who shared a photo ahead of the royal commission last year and revealed that 12 out of 33 classmates had committed suicide because of the sexual and physical abuse that took place at the school.

A shocking video has caught a shark cruising just feet away from a man and his daughter while they swim at a popular beach in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. Footage filmed by the man captures his daughter, left, swimming unawares in the shallows. Moments later a shark's fin can be seen racing past.

Saldana, whose casting as the legendary performer and civil rights activist has already been slammed, appears to have darker skin and a wider nose in a poster and video promoting the movie. The Afro-Latina actress, 37, tweeted a quote from Simone on Wednesday, only for the family of the late Feeling Good singer to demand she 'take Nina's name out your mouth for the rest of your life'. Dozens of people blasted director Cynthia Mort and Saldana for the casting, saying it was disrespectful to darken the actress' face to play Simone, who spent years of her life campaigning for civil rights. Others questioned why film bosses had not chosen a darker-skinned actress for Nina, seeing as her skin color was such a huge part of her life.

While she's recently been based in Los Angeles to cement a career abroad, Delta Goodrem has decided to put her Hollywood Hills mansion on the market as she returns to Australia to reprise her role as a judge on The Voice. According to Realtor.com, the 31-year-old singer has listed the house for approximately US$4.199 million, after having purchased it from Brad Sherwood six years ago for just over $3 million.  Built in 2003, this five-bedroom Mediterranean-style house features state-of-the-art interiors as well as luxurious outdoor entertainment areas.

The footage recorded at a coastal facility in the Russian Arctic shows a man hurl the dog towards the polar bear before the animal uses its claws to attack the yelping and helpless pet. However, it has since emerged that the man, throwing the dog towards the predator, was seeking to deflect the bear from attacking a stranded woman. But there are now calls for an investigation by animal rights groups and for the man to be severely punished.

Cyclists in the Adelaide Hills were stopped in their tracks yesterday as a koala climbed up the wheel of a bike in search of a refreshing drink. The five-year-old female koala has now been named 'Carolina' after one of the cyclist's partners. She was released back into the wild on Wednesday after being tagged by wildlife rescuers so they can keep an eye on her.

Organisers are expecting the biggest ever crowd of Muslims to turn out at Australia's biggest gay and lesbian celebration at the weekend. Alice Aslan, from the Muslims Against Homophobia group (MAHA said she has been deluged with supporters wanting to join her marching at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on Saturday. A tourist has had the shock of his life after finding a terrifying deep sea creature with bulging eyes washed up on a New Zealand beach. Martin Stehlik, from the Czech Republic, was strolling down Ruakaka Beach with his uncle George Plesky when he found the enormous bigeye thresher shark and quickly used the opportunity to snap rare photos of him holding the creature's unusually long tail. 'It was just so strange and we'd never seen anything like it before, with its long tail and it's big, black eyes. It was very unusual,' Mr Plesky said.

Two people who were among one of the first groups to bring aid to several remote island villages after Fiji was ravaged by Cyclone Winston have described the harrowing scenes they were met with five days after the category five storm hit. John Philp, 47, and his niece Michelle own an 800 acre coconut farm on the island of Vanuabalavu, in the Lau Group, east of Fiji, which was completely destroyed - along with their staff's living quarters - when the cyclone tore through the island nation on February 20. 'You know when you see photos in Siberia where they are testing atomic bombs, it looked like that - the cyclone laid waste to the whole countryside,' Mr Philp told Daily Mail Australia.

A Washington state woman is being investigated for potential animal abuse after a photo (right) she shared to Facebook of her dog's face covered with a used 'pee pad' to punish it for urinating in her home went viral. Meghan Pembroke, spokesperson for the city of Everett, told Mail Online that Lisa Parker (left) is currently being investigated for potential animal abuse and could possibly face charges if found to be true. On February 12, Parker shared a shocking photo of her dog, Ludo, to Facebook with his pee pad strapped to his face that was allegedly soaked in urine, oxyclean and vinegar. In the caption of the now deleted post, Parker wrote: 'Successful dog shaming. Ludo thought it would be a good idea to wet the floor, five minutes after his goodnight potty run. He is finding out...not so bright! I sopped it up with a wet pad, before scrubbing it with oxyclean and vinegar. He is now wearing this creation'. In another post, she admitted to stuffing dog 'S***' in it's mouth and taping it shut.'

Bowie passed away from a secret battle with cancer on January 10. Another muttered under his breath and looked to be swearing at Guillotin (top right). Meanwhile the prankster waved (centre), licked his lips or fluttered his eyelashes in response.

The crew of the yacht Maiken (inset) were sailing through the south Pacific near the Vava'u Islands in Tonga when they noticed that the water in the distance was a strange colour (top left). Then, as they approached, the sea mysteriously turned to stone (top right). The crew documented the phenomenon in a series of remarkable pictures as they sailed into formation (bottom left) to investigate it. What they didn't yet know was that, just a few miles away, a volcano was erupting under the surface (bottom right), spewing out new land that formed an island right before their eyes.

The spectacular process is formed by rivers continuously splitting into smaller channels, giving the impression they have been braided.
