Most of the international organisations in The Hague are based in the so-called International Zone. In order to make the area more attractive to international organisations and residents, the city is investing in extra amenities, greater security, pleasant open spaces and better transport links. The neighbourhoods behind the dunes are part of the International Zone.

The Hague is the International City of Peace and Justice. This is symbolised by the Peace Palace, which stands at the centre of the International Zone.

The heart of the area is characterised by parks and forests, but it also includes lovely stately homes. Thanks to Madurodam and the city's many museums, the area attracts many tourists and day trippers. It is popular among the international community, and the pretty residential neighbourhoods in this part of the old city are also home to a number of embassies.

They have been joined in more recent years by organisations like the OPCW and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
