Geneva Motor Show LIVE: Koenigsegg Regera

After last year’s concept version the Koenigsegg Regera in production form has been featured in a world premiere during the ongoing Geneva Motor Show.

We have been treated to a familiar design – call us blind but we’re actually not spotting any differences – though Koenigsegg says the production series Regera has gone through an “intense period of development, testing and homologation” which has actually brought more than 3,000 changes to the original version. Among the amenities to be found inside the Regera we can highlight the power seats, wireless smartphone charger, or the infotainment system with Apple CarPlay functionality. As we already know the model will be limited to a series production of just 80 units and the company has also confirmed it has already started accepting orders form interested parties.

The most important aspect of the Regera is the powertrain – which actually makes it one of the few supercars that will be able to go head to head with the Geneva Motor Show superstar Bugatti Chiron. That’s because the Regera also comes with at least 1,500 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet of torque. This is possible thanks to the hybrid powertrain consisting of a biturbo 5.0-liter V8 engine and three electric motors, paired with the unique Direct Drive system that eliminates the need for a traditional gearbox. According to the company, the latter has a “clutch-slip mechanism that uses the hydraulic coupling to convert torque at medium/high speeds during fast acceleration. This allows the combustion engine to gain revs and power, thereby giving the sensation of a traditional downshift with the associated aural enjoyment, even without the traditional gearbox.”

The immense power is good for that spectacular level – 1,500 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet of torque – which should be enough to propel this wheeled monster to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.8 seconds, then to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 6.6 seconds, and to 186 mph in 10.9 seconds. It has an acceleration time of about 20 seconds for the zero to 248 mph sprint. Take that Chiron.
