'I don't mind in the least if they didn't clap': Mad Max costume designer Jenny Beavans reveals she doesn't care that Hollywood stars failed to applaud her Oscar win

Her walk to the Oscars stage solicited bemused stares and determined refusals from Hollywood actors to clap.

And while the moment has gone on to be one of the biggest topics of debate since the show aired on Sunday, costume designer Jenny Beavan has admitted that she doesn’t ‘mind in the least’ if her peers did not applaud her win.

Taking to The Hollywood Reporter to give her version of events about the night, the Mad Max costume designer wrote: ‘They didn't have to! I don’t mind in the least if they didn't clap.’

She continued: ‘I felt really good, I felt the warmth, I was so proud of doing the film for George and it didn’t matter what anyone else thought, really.’

In the piece, Jenny explained that even she doesn’t clap at everything that happens in the long ceremony because ‘your hands get tired’.

The British designer caused a stir in Hollywood on Monday when she sauntered to the stage of Loews Hollywood Hotel to collect her Oscar in slacks and a leather jacket decorated with a Swarovski skull and flames.

Showing her good nature, she commented about her choice of ensemble saying: ‘I’m short, I’m fat. I really would look ridiculous in a gown. What I was actually wearing at the Oscars was sort of an homage to Mad Max — a kind of biker outfit.’

Indeed Jenny is the rule breaker is known to wear whatever she pleases to Hollywood's night of nights and in 1987 she opted for a tuxedo, causing mouths to gape.

Such is her penchant for wearing what she likes, pal Stephen Fry jokingly called her a 'bag lady' just weeks ago for her scruffy ensemble at the Baftas.

She won her first Oscar in 1986 for the Merchant Ivory film A Room With A View.

In an interview after her win on Monday, Jenny told The Daily Mail said she didn't care much for Hollywood gowns.

'I am very happy to talk about it. I don't do frocks and absolutely don't do heels, I have a bad back.

'I look ridiculous in a beautiful gown. This was a homage to Mad Max and I obviously didn't get it quite right at the Baftas, the scarf was meant to be an oil rag,' she said.
