NFL star Mohamed Sanu gave his girlfriend her own Wembley moment with a shock proposal during the League Cup final

  • Bengals wide receiver Sanu tweeted video of shocked fiancee saying yes
  • The couple had been enjoying a weekend of football in London
  • Cincinnati will feature in NFL's International series at Wembley in October

NFL star Mohamed Sanu is used to the pressure of a big stadium but the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver faced a different kind of proposition when he took his girlfriend to the Capital One Cup final.

Sanu’s missus Lauren Mackenzie thought her beau was just treating her to a day out at Wembley, but he had a bigger surprise in store. The Bengals star saw Manchester City’s penalty shoot-out win over Liverpool as the ideal opportunity to ask for her Mackenzie’s hand in marriage.

Thankfully she said yes, but in a video Sanu posted on his Twitter page with a message it is clear the proposal came as a complete surprise.

With Mackenzie’s attention averted by on-field matters, Sanu pulls out the engagement ring and prepares to pop the question.

As Mackenzie turns around she sees her man has taken a knee and cannot hide the look of shock on her face and asks Sanu: ‘Are you serious?’ The 26-year-old certainly was not joking and, after taking a moment to compose herself, the football-mad Mackenzie said yes.

Sanu will be playing at Wembley next season when the Bengals ‘host’ the Washington Redskins but he is not a familiar face and was conspicuous in the crowd until he got down on bended knee.

The ring Sanu presented to Mackenzie with 86,000 onlookers at Wembley, she asks 'Could it be more perfect?'

As those around him realised what was going on, attention turned to the wideout and his now fiancee as she embraced him on the Wembley terraces.

Clearly delighted to get Sanu’s ring on her finger, Mackenzie took to Instagram to share the big news.

Accompanying a picture of the newly engaged couple at the home of football Mackenzie wrote:

‘Yesterday @mohamedsanu made this dream come true. Along with seeing Liverpool score a goal, overtime and pks. It has just been an overwhelming sensation.

TIMELINE OF THE FUTURE MR AND MRS SANU'S ROMANTIC WEEKEND

  • Mohamed Sanu and Lauren Mackenzie jet out of Newark Airport on Friday.
  • The couple take in the early kick-off at Upton Park on Saturday. Sanu has his picture taken on the pitch and Mackenzie meets Andy Carroll.
  • The couple head to Wembley for the Capital One cup final on Sunday.
  • Sanu pops the question and a shocked Mackenzie says yes.

‘On top of all these dreams coming true, my dream of marrying my best friend happened at the same place. I'm still in complete shock.

‘Thank you so much for a mind blowing experience and promising me forever’.

It capped what was a dream weekend for the couple as the previous day they had watched West Ham’s 1-0 over Sunderland.

Mackenzie even had her picture taken with Hammers striker Andy Carroll.

Next season Sanu will be bidding for his own Super Bowl ring with the Bengals but for now his plans will be turning to the marital variety.
