Hardly a Material Girl! Madonna gives away FREE tickets to intimate Melbourne concert at 1,500-seat theatre to thank Australian fans for waiting 23 years for her to return

Recording artist Madonna has announced she will kick off her first Australian tour in 23 years with an intimate Melbourne show.

The Material Girl, 57, is scheduled perform at the 1,500-capacity Forum Theatre on March 10 - before playing a string of arena dates across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane later that month.

The first date of her Rebel Heart tour will be an exclusive, one-night-only show, named 'Madonna: Tears of a Clown' and will be on a far smaller scale to the huge stadium set-pieces she's known for.

But unfortunately for those scrambling for last-minute tickets, the free show is exclusive to members of her fan club who signed up before March 1st.

Madonna said: 'I wanted to do something special for Australia because you have been so patient and waited so long.'

She continued: 'The Tears Of A Clown show will make its debut on March 10th. Performance art, comedy, story telling and music of course! Especially for you my Rebel Heart fans down under!"

Meanwhile, the superstar will play her first ever shows in New Zealand in March, as she's scheduled to appear at the Vector Arena on the 5th and 6th.

Madonna hinted at performing a music and comedy mash-up called 'Tears of a Clown' while onstage in Macau last month.

The Queen of Pop previously made her stand up debut in April last year on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to mixed response.

Meanwhile, she last played Australia in 1993 during her Girlie Show World Tour in support of her fifth album Erotica - when she was making headlines for her explicit coffee table book Sex.
