  • Jovetic, 25, did not manage to hold down a first-team place at City

Manchester City outcast Stevan Jovetic marked his Inter Milan debut by scoring a last-minute wonder goal against Atalanta to seal a 1-0 win.

The 25-year-old striker is on loan at Inter this season after having failed to establish himself in the first-team at City.

Maximiliano Moralez almost gave Atalanta the perfect start on their visit to the San Siro in the fifth minute, but his powerful strike was sent inches over the crossbar.

Inter went close themselves towards the end of the first-half, but Assane Demoya Gnoukouri's shot was saved by Marco Sportiello.

After the restart, the hosts pressed with a bit more conviction and Geoffrey Kondogbia's long-range effort forced another fine stop from Sportiello.

Atalanta were reduced to 10 men in the 71st minute when Carlos Carmona received his second yellow card for two clumsy fouls within moments of each other.

Jovetic scored the winning goal in the dying embers of the game, cutting inside from the flank to curl a fine shot in from 20 yards.

At his official unveiling as an Inter player earlier this week, the Montegro international spoke of his delight at playing more regular football. He also tipped his new side to secure a return to the Champions League.

Inter have not played in Europe's elite club competition since the 2011-12 season and this season are not playing in any continental tournament whatsoever. Jovetivc, however, is confident that this can soon be rectified.

'I think we can achieve a third-placed finish,' he said, 'There are lots of good sides in the league but we have a strong team.'
