Daryl Janmaat was involved in an angry confrontation with Newcastle United fans following the 1-0 defeat by Stoke City on Wednesday night.

Janmaat approached the supporters who made their way to the Britannia Stadium after the final whistle and the Dutch defender, as well as his team-mates, was met with a torrent of abuse.

Security guards tried to separate the 26-year-old from the travelling Toon army, who can be heard shouting 'f*** off McClaren' after another loss kept them in 19th place in the Premier League.

Supporters in the North East are worried about the threat of relegation and Steve McClaren's job is under pressure after another lacklustre display on the road. They have not won on their travels since a trip to Tottenham on December 13

Janmaat, who climbed over the advertising hoardings to get closer to the fans, may have been simply trying to reason with the irate supporters and clapped them as he made his way down the tunnel.

Xherdan Shaqiri scored the only goal of the game to boost Stoke's hope of European qualification this season, though McClaren thought they produced an improved performance.

'We didn't deserve that,' McClaren declared on Wednesday night.

'Over the last 18 days we talked a lot about what we need to do and I think we started that process tonight in terms of attitude, work-rate and becoming harder to beat. I thought we were very organised, very disciplined.

'We stifled, frustrated Stoke - so much so that I think they had one shot in the second half and it's a goal. Treacherous conditions and I thought we deserved to fight our way to at least a point.

'This game's cruel and it's been cruel to us again. Dust yourselves down and we go again on Saturday.'
