Queen Letizia must have been feeling grey as she attended the launch of an exhibition for a renowned Spanish writer this afternoon.

The Queen of Spain, 43, chose a slate-coloured coat with charcoal heels but gave her look a pop of colour with a floral-printed scarf.

Letizia accompanied King Felipe, 48, to the opening of an exhibition on Miguel de Cervantes' work at the National Library in Madrid.

The monarch paired her billowing coat with a structured clutch and a vibrant scarf as she attended the launch for one of the most universal Spanish writers.

To finish off the outfit, the former journalist had styled her hair in tousled curls and wore delicate drop earrings with a plum eyeshadow.

The royals congregated outside the National Library where Letizia may have regretted her seemingly bare legs in the winter weather.

Felipe matched his wife in a single-breasted grey suit worn with a purple tie and matching striped shirt.

Letizia and Felipe both smiled and waved to the crowd before they were taken inside to see the exhibition for themselves.

The royal couple were shown around the exhibition, titled 'Miguel de Cervantes: the Myth of Life,' which examines the Spanish novelist, poet and playwright.

Cervantes, who died in 1616, is best known for penning Don Quixote, considered a classic of Western literature and one of the best works of fiction ever written.

The exhibition, which will be open to the public from today until May 22, is divided into three sections.

The first analyses Miguel de Cervantes the man, the second displays images of his face and how it was depicted, while the third examines the myth.

The Queen took off her coat to view the exhibits, revealing a grey dress with ruffle detailing.

Letizia is known for her daring sense of style, which she demonstrated at an engagement last Thursday.

In contrast to the sombre ensemble she chose for today's event, she opted for a pair of wide-legged leather trousers as she accompanied husband King Felipe to the official opening of the 35th ARCO International Contemporary Art Fair at the Ifema exhibition site in the Spanish capital.

But she gave the look a conservative touch by pairing her racy bottoms with a crisp white shirt and added a pop of colour with a fuschia-pink jacket and matching clutch.
