Roger Federer donned a tuxedo to head to the Oscars in Los Angeles and marked the occasion with a shot of tequila.

The 34-year-old, who has recently announced his return to the practice court after successful knee surgery, took to the red carpet in Beverly Hills to soak up the atmosphere at Hollywood’s star night.

In video footage Federer joins Guillermo, who’s from the American programme the Jimmy Kimmel show, to have a quick drink before heading into the prestigious ceremony.

‘I’m a champion like you...’ joked Guillermo, before having 17-time Grand Slam winner Federer in raptures of laughter by claiming his prowess was in drinking rather than tennis.

Ever the good sport, Federer gulped his shot of tequila and quipped, ‘I’ll get back to No 1 with shots like that!’

As a dedicated athlete the Swiss maestro won’t regularly sample the delights of alcohol. ‘That was a strong one,’ said Federer after composing himself.

The world No 3 was joined at the Oscars by fellow tennis stars Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, who both attended the Vanity Fair Party.

Federer will have delighted his fans by announcing he is back on court following knee surgery.

He missed tournaments in Rotterdam and Dubai having had arthroscopic surgery in Switzerland to repair a torn meniscus the day after his defeat by Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-finals last month.

Federer posted a couple of pictures on social media earlier this month proving he is hitting again and declared: 'Rarely felt so happy being back on a practice court.'

He was expected to make his return at Masters 1000 events in either Indian Wells or Miami in March but has delayed his comeback to prepare for the gruelling season ahead.

He wrote on his Facebook page: 'As it is a long year, I don't want to push it too hard and come back too soon.

'Thus, I will unfortunately not be able to make it back in time for the great event in Indian Wells but I do plan on playing in the desert next year.

'After consultation with my team, I have decided to enter the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.'

The 34-year-old assured fans his recuperation was going to plan.

He added: 'The rehab for my knee is going really well! I have now had a lot of great practises on the court and in the gym.'
