Sam Faiers has defended her boyfriend against viewers who slammed him for being controlling.

The former TOWIE star told The Sun on Sunday's Fabulous magazine that Paul Knightley 'cares so much'.

Paul's behaviour send Twitter into a frenzy when their programme The Baby Diaries aired last month but his devoted partner says he's just a 'perfectionist'.

But Sam explained, telling the magazine: 'As a couple we're old fashioned. I was brought up in a family where women cook and clean and the men go to work and that's just the way we are. That's all I've known.'

The show captured Paul refusing to move in with 25-year-old Sam when she was six months pregnant or cook for himself.

At one point when she was breastfeeding Paul Jr, he even asked her to make him beans on toast.

He also told her that he didn't like her choice of baby outfits, so she returned them. But Sam justified his behaviour on the show saying, 'He's just very particular about what he likes.'

She explained further to Fabulous, saying: 'The thing about Paul is that he cares about me and the baby so much that people mistake that for being controlling.

'When I showed him the baby clothes and he was like: "I'm not too sure on that…" it's not him being an a*******. It's just because he really cares about how the baby looks, he's a perfectionist'.

The same goes for Sam's career and her appearance, which Sam puts down to Paul's genuine interest in her.

During the TV show, which aired almost a month ago, on Sunday 7 February, Sam was seen telling Paul Senior, 'I feel like you haven't been around,' in the weeks leading up to the birth.

The chilled-out father-to-be also took a two hour nap while Sam was in labour.

Fellow TOWIE star Maria Fowler tweeted: 'Watching Sam Faiers baby diaries ... So cute! But surprised about her bf though, he seems a bit of a man child?'

A second wrote: 'Anyone else think that Paul and his mum are very controlling and have an odd feel about them ?? #babydiaries #samfaires.' [sic].

Another said: '5 minutes into Sam Faiers baby diaries and I already think her boyfriend is an absolute k***.'

One Twitter user wrote: 'Just watched the Sam faiers programme. Her boyfriend and his mother are very creepy... Strange relationship' after the moment Paul shared with his mother Gaynor, above

Awkward: The couple have been together for 16 months and welcomed their first child together, Paul, just weeks ago, but the social media site branded Paul Senior as 'controlling' and a 'man child'

Paul Senior was also lampooned for an awkwardly lingering kiss he shared with his mother, Gaynor, on the programme.

Sam, however, described her total shock at the negative reaction to this tender moment. The star and her partner watched the programme before it aired and saw nothing wrong with the mother-son moment which sent Twitter into meltdown.

One wrote: 'Just watched the Sam faiers programme. Her boyfriend and his mother are very creepy... Strange relationship.'

While a second said: 'Sam Faiers boyfriend awkward kiss with his MUM!!!! Did anyone else see this?'

Trolls were also quick to mock the star's choice to name her son after his father.

One wrote: 'How can u look at a newborn baby and say 'he looks like a paul' LOOL.'
