Police are investigating a mystery white powder found in a black Mercedes which was sold by Kate Moss days earlier.

The substance, which was wrapped in an old magazine cutting, is said to have been found by a man who was cleaning the car in the Midlands after the 42-year-old supermodel part-exchanged it at a London dealership last week.

Also discovered in the 2009 S500 saloon's glove compartment were a cigarette lighter, tissues, a bottle of water and a pen.

According to the Sunday Mirror, a police spokesperson confirmed they were running tests to establish the nature of the substance.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: 'We have retrieved the substance found and are carrying out tests to determine what it is.'

There is no evidence to suggest it belonged to Kate, however.

MailOnline has contacted the supermodel's representatives and Derbyshire Police for comment.

Kate was recently pictured out and about in London on crutches after injuring her knee on a skiing trip in Verbier, south-western Switzerland, with her boyfriend Count Nikolai von Bismarck, 28.

According to The Sun, the pair - who were first linked last year after her split from husband Jamie Hince - were on the lookout for a new pad in the capital.

An insider explained: 'She would like another house in town for her and Nikolai to use.

'It would give them a bit of privacy and would be really handy as they are both party animals and are often up late.

'The house would also be something special for her and Nikolai to share and would seal their relationship.'
