Sir Nicholas Serota, CH

DIRECTOR, TATE GALLERIES

2015 was an eventful year for the Tate, with the directors of both Modern and Britain galleries announcing their departures. As the man at the helm of the institution housing the UK’s national collection of British art, however, Serota remains one of the most prominent figures in the art world. He has led the Tate since 1988, having previously been a director at Oxford’s Museum of Modern Art and the Whitechapel Gallery, and he oversaw the openings of Tate St Ives in 1993 and Tate Modern in 2000. He studied at Cambridge, switching from Economics to History of Art, before going on to the Courtauld Institute in London. Known for his passion for conceptual art, he has sat on the jury for the Turner Prize and was appointed a Companion of Honour in 2013 for his services to art.
