The Dowager Countess is revealed to be a witch, Lady Edith kills Lady Mary, and aliens attack: Disappointed Downton Abbey fans create alternate endings after its lackluster finale airs in the US 

While plenty of American fans were thrilled with the happy endings in Downton Abbey's series finale — which aired on Sunday night in the US — not everyone was quite so thrilled with the neat-and-tidy way each character’s storyline was wrapped up.

Rather, a number of less sentimental viewers expressed bitter disappointment with the perfect way in which every character seemed to get exactly what they wanted.

To remedy that, a few fans have taken to Twitter to offer up their own ideas about how the six-season-long series should have concluded, dreaming up a few shocking twists and turns that, while far-fetched, would certainly have been an interesting way to end the period drama.

Happy endings: Some fans of Downton Abbey were disappointed that it ended so neatly, with even Lady Edith, who has had more than her fair share of bad luck, tying the knot

They do, too! Lady Mary also got hitched and revealed that she was expecting another child; it wasn't indicated whether she would pay more attention to this one

Death wish: Fans were hoping for something a little more interesting, though, like death and revenge

In the real finale — spoiler alert! — there were weddings, babies, new romances, and new jobs. Lady Edith finally got married, a somewhat-nicer Lady Mary found out she was pregnant, and Anna and Mr. Bates welcomed their first baby after years of struggling.

Daisy, Isobel Crawley, Tom Branson, and even Mrs. Patmore coupled up (or showed the promise of doing so), the Dowager Countess and Mrs. Crawley made amends, and Mr. Barrow found a conscience, allowing him to come back to Downton.

A woman named Nancy Hicks expressed the thoughts of many when she tweeted: '#DowntonAbbeyFinale a disappointment. Each character gets a "bow", everyone paired up like Noah's Ark. We deserve better than Hallmark ending.'

And better they got — if fans were willing to delve into their social media feeds for some alternate endings, as Mashable first did. 

She's an animagus! Plenty of people had alternate plotlines for the Dowager Countess

Murderous tendencies: Some seemed to hope that the Dowanger Countess' lady's maid Danker, who always tried to stir up trouble, would be killed

Another universe: Perhaps inspired by the fact that The Walking Dead aired at the same time, this fan wanted zombies to attack Downton

Welcome to Hogwarts! In a Harry Potter mash-up, this fan joked that Marigold was a witch

Some people had some death fantasies, hoping their least favorite characters would have gone the way of Matthew and Sybil Crawley. 

'Probably won't happen, but wouldn't it be great if Mary died in the finale of Downton Abbey? Ideally, murdered by Edith,' suggested Trey Stokes.

'Wouldn't it be a nice surprise if Spratt killed Denker and this show ended as incredibly dark as it was cheery in the middle,' wrote Kenna Trent. 

Heidi Meurer also dreamed about Denker dying, writing: 'My favorite part of the Downton Abbey finale was when the Dowager Countess killed Denker with a bow and arrow and nobody noticed.'

'Wasn't expecting #DowntonAbbey to end with Lady Mary being murdered by a brain-sucking alien,' joked Dave Nemetz.  

Coupling up: Daisy, the kitchen maid, looked to have finally found romance with Andy

May the force be with him: This man joked that Lord Grantham was killed by Kylo Ren, Han Solo and Princess Leia's son from the latest Star Wars movie

Highlight unlikely: Another tried to fool fans on Twitter into thinking head butler Mr. Carson turned out to be a serial killer

But Dumbledore is gay! This man joked that the Dowager Countess — played by Maggie Smith, who also plays Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies — was really the Transfigurations teacher the whole time

Others tried their hands at mixing cannons, twisting up Downton's characters and storylines with other movies and TV shows. 

'Downton finale; Dowager Countess wakes up next to Dumbledore and it was all a dream,' offered Ron Webber, referencing the fact that Dame Maggie Smith also plays Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies.

'Great twist in the Downton Abbey finale when Lady Edith’s daughter received her invitation to Hogwarts,' tweeted Tyler Dean Kempf.  

Retirement: Married at the beginning of the season, Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson lived almost happily ever after, with Mr. Carson suffering from an illness forcing him to step back his butler duties

We don't think that's what happened... Not much of a Lady Mary fan, this man wished she'd have been killed by an alien

Another death: For a show that had so many major deaths so early on, it seemed to some that Downton should have killed more people off in the final season

New job: Instead of opening a car shop with Tom Branson, this fan joked that Lady Mary's husband Henry Talbot should have become an Uber driver

John Gleak was inspired by the latest Star Wars flick, joking: 'Not sure having Kylo Ren kill Lord Grantham was the way to go in the Downton Abbey series finale.' 

'That was clever to end #DowntonAbbey with Lady Edith getting stuck at a seaside retreat and writing a classic TV ad for Coke,' joked Seth Masket, referencing the end of Mad Men. 

Parody account Meanwhile at Downton visualized Mr. Carson in a Friday Night Lights-type series, writing: 'Carson leaves Downton to go coach high school football in Philadelphia. #FNL #cleareyesfullhearts'

'What a finale for Downton Abbey! Can't believe that Mr. Carson was actually Jack the Ripper,' wrote @phouch.

Baby makes three: After years of struggling, Anna and Mr. Bates finally had a baby

Already in trouble: This woman joked that Anna and Mr. Bates' baby is already being falsely accused of a crime, following in his parents' footsteps

Others let their imaginations run wild, coming up with supernatural twists, modern-day turns, and some not-quite-so-crazy scenarios.

'I can only assume Anna & Bates' baby was arrested for murder immediately upon leaving the birth canal,' joked @carlso_shannah. 

'Hoped the end of Downton Abbey would be Lord Grantham looking out the window at a horde cresting the hill and saying "The zombies are here",' wrote Aaron Fullerton. 

Imagining the '20s quickly catching up with 2016, Jill Czarnowski tweeted: 'I really enjoyed that touching moment on Downton Abbey tonight where Lady Mary's husband decided to change careers & drive for Uber.'

Offering a new take on the actual ending — in which Branson and Lady Mary's husband go into business together — Chris Turnham added: 'Can't wait for the Downton Abbey spinoff "Branson & Talbot" where Tom and Henry get to finally explore their lives as secret gay lovers
