Week One – It’s OK to be LGBTI!

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Ps 139: 14)

In our opening week, we will define what we mean by spirituality, sexuality and gender, plus we will look at how our understanding of these concepts have changed over history. Using the words of David, we will also explore what it means to be LGBTI and ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’.

Week 2 – Reading the Bible for All It’s Worth

He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. Now then, why do you test God by putting on the necks of the Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? (Acts 15:9 – 10)

For people of faith, the Bible is important. Tonight we will dispel the myths surrounding what the Bible says about people of diverse sexuality and gender, and focus on what the Bible does say on living life to the full.

Week 3 – LGBTI Spirituality

See how the flowers of the filed grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these! (Matt 6:28-29)

Tonight we will look at both the stages of faith and the coming out process, discovering the inherent spirituality of the LGBTI community. We will also cover some of the classic spiritual disciplines that have sustained faith through the centuries, with a special focus on forgiveness. Plus we will also look at ways of developing resilient mental health.

Week 4 – Friends, Relationships and Intimacy

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. (1 Cor 13: 4-5)

Relationships are hard for anybody, but for those from the LGBTI community who want to honour their faith and share their life with a soul mate, there are few places to turn for help and advice. This session will be about establishing a set of healthy guidelines for friendships, relationships and intimacy.

Week 5 – Looking After Yourself for the Journey Ahead

On the evening of the first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” (John 20: 19)

On this last night of The Homecoming Project, we will lock at self-care, especially in the face of opposition form friends, family or church. We will also be joined by some ministers from around the city who will lead us in a commissioning service to send participants on their way as happy, healthy, LGBTI people of faith.
