Annabelle Wallis confirms she's set to star alongside Tom Cruise in a reboot of classic horror movie The Mummy

She was rumoured to have be in talks to sign on for a role in the latest reboot of classic horror movie, The Mummy.

And Annabelle Wallis was clearly too delighted with the part to keep it under wraps, as she announced she'd signed up to star alongside Tom Cruise in the flick on Tuesday morning.

The 31-year-old - who stars in the gritty BBC drama Peaky Blinders - confirmed she would be taking on a role in the film, saying she was 'excited' to be joining the cast and crew on the project.

Posting a snapshot of a story by Variety detailing her potential casting in the film to her Instagram account, the Oxford-born beauty wrote: 'Very excited to be joining this incredible group of people. #TheMummy #TomCruise and Belle's xx.'

According to the website, the rising star - who is currently dating Coldplay frontman Chris Martin - is believed to be playing an archaeologist in the film alongside Tom.

However Tom won't be playing the bandaged monster from the sarcophagus, as stunning Kingsman star, Sofia Boutella, will be taking on the role of Universal's iconic horror star.

So far little is known about the studio's most recent reboot of one of its most classic films.

However the new title will be set in the modern day - a stark contrast to the period setting of the last three titles under The Mummy umbrella, which starred Brendan Frasier.

Star Trek and Transformers writer Alex Kurtzman has been brought on-board to helm the project, and will take up the reigns as director.

The latest take on the classic monster flick is slated for a 2017 release at the moment, with the film due to hit screens in June.

The Mummy won't be the actress' first foray into horror, however, as she starred in the creepy supernatural flick, Annabelle (2014), which saw her terrorised by a cursed vintage doll.

Meanwhile, following up on her roles in Peaky Blinders and Sacha Baron Cohen's Grimsby, she will next hit the big screen in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur flick - due in Spring 2017.
