'Anyone can take a selfie but not everyone can take a joke': Bette Midler slams Kim Kardashian with another withering zinger amid nude selfie Twitter war... and denies trying to 'fake friend' her with tree gift

Bette Midler has fired back at Kim Kardashian in their Twitter war of words, claiming that while the reality star can take a selfie, she can't take a joke.

The 70-year-old singer and actress riled Kim on Monday by commenting on her nude selfie.

The Wind Beneath My Wings star mused that the mother-of-two would have to 'swallow the camera' to show something we haven't seen before.

In response, Kim, 35, wrote: 'hey @BetteMidler I know it's past your bedtime but if you're still up and reading this send nudes #justkidding.'

She added: 'hey @BetteMidler I really didn't want to bring up how you sent me a gift awhile back trying to be a fake friend then come at me #dejavu (sic)'

But Bette shot back with a withering zinger, tweeting on Tuesday morning: '@KimKardashian: I never tried to fake friend you. Looks like anyone can take a selfie but not everyone can take a joke...'

According to TMZ, the gift in question was a tree that Bette planted back in 2007 in Kim's honour, as part of her MillionTreesNYC restoration initiative.

The actress apparently sent the reality star a handwritten note and dedicated one of the trees to her.

But Bette wasn't the only person feeling Kim's wrath on Monday - she also responded to Chloe Moretz, who suggested she be a better role model to young women.

'@KimKardashian I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies,' the 19-year-old wrote.

When some users of the social networking site then suggested Chloe was 'slut shaming' Kim, she tweeted again to defend herself.

'There's a huge difference in respecting the platform that you're given as a celebrity and "slut shaming" something I never have done and would never do,' she wrote.

Kim promptly fired back: 'Let's all welcome @ChloeGMoretz to twitter, since no one knows who she is. your nylon cover is cute boo.'

She also joked that she had paid off the $53m debt her husband Kanye West claimed to have, writing: 'Sorry I'm late to the party guys I was busy cashing my 80 million video game check & transferring 53 million into our joint account.'

Kim finished off her rant by sharing another naked picture, this time with the caption: 'Liberated.'

Some Twitter users wondered if the tweets had been sent out by the Keeping Up With The Kardashian star's husband or her outspoken sister Khloe, but she wrote on Tuesday morning that she was absolutely the person behind them.

The star's sisters Kourtney and Kylie Jenner have since spoken out in support of her, as has her friend Chrissy Teigen.

Kylie, 18, tweeted that Kim 'is a legend', while Kourtney shared one of her sister's animated Kimojis, which was throwing money.

And Miley Cyrus refused to take sides, sharing a Kimoji of a bottom on Instagram, writing: 'Women, you ALL are acting tacky AF!' 

Never afraid to strip off herself, it was clear that Miley thought the debate on International Women's Day should not be about Kim's nudity.
