'I knew at some point I would have to come out publicly,' Lilly wrote in a post titled 'Sex change shocker - Wachowski brothers now sisters!!!'

'So yeah, I'm transgender. And yeah, I've transitioned,' she said, adding that she is out to her wife, family and friends.

'Most people at work know too. Everyone is cool with it. Yes, thanks to my fabulous sister they've done it before, but also because they're fantastic people.

'Without the love and support of my wife and friends and family I would not be where I am today.'

She added: 'My sister Lana and I have largely avoided the press. I find talking about my art frustratingly tedious and talking about myself a wholly mortifying experience.

She also spoke of the difficulties faced by the transgender community, saying that while progress has been made, 'we continue to be demonized and vilified.'

In her statement Ms Wachowski claimed she was forced into 'outing' herself after approaches from several media organizations, most recently DailyMail.com.

DailyMail.com categorically denies this.

A spokesman said: 'As Ms Wachowski says herself, we were not the first media group which approached her and we made absolutely clear at several points in the conversation that we were only interested in doing the story with her cooperation and had no intention of publishing anything without her consent.

'Our reporter was extremely sympathetic and courteous at all times.

'We are baffled as to why Ms Wachowski has reacted as she has but we wish her well with her journey.'

Lilly Wachowski's transition comes at a time when there's a growing spotlight on the transgender community.

The most high-profile celebrity to come out as transgender recently is reality television personality and Olympic gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner.

The 66-year-old has been an advocate for LGBT rights since her transition last year.

The Wachowskis, who rarely give interviews, have carved a reputation in Hollywood with The Matrix films, V for Vendetta and most recently, Netflix's sci-fi series Sense8.
