Hope it doesn't Rain Man! Dustin Hoffman wears short-sleeved shirt as he goes for a romantic stroll with wife Lisa on set of The Meyerowitz Stories in New York

The weather is notoriously changeable in New York at this time of year.

But that did not stop Dustin Hoffman from wearing a short-sleeved shirt as he went for a romantic stroll with his wife Lisa on the set of The Meyerowitz Stories on Thursday.

The pair looked like the were having a ball as they pounded the pavement during a break in filming in the Big Apple.

The 78-year-old looked reasonably presentable in a green shirt, wine-coloured tie, jeans and brown leather shoes.

However it was the actor's bushy beard that really caught the eye, and at one point his 61-year-old wife, who he married in 1980, could not help but stare at it was they went their merry way.

The father-of-six's latest movie tells the exciting story of an estranged New York family who come together for the career retrospective of the family patriarch, who is a respected artist.

Earlier this week Dustin was spotted with self-styled funnyman Adam Sandler, 49, who he featured in a supporting role alongside in last year's critical and commercial bomb The Cobbler, which raked in just $850,000 at the box office despite costing $10 million to make.

Other big names spotted on set on Thursday included English acting veteran Emma Thompson and up-and-comer Grace Van Patten.

Earlier this week Dustin was shown breaking down in tears after learning about his 'hero' great-grandmother Libba, who survived life in a Soviet concentration camp before escaping to start a new life in America on Finding Your Roots.

The Tootsie legend was rocked after discovering how his ancestor was taken from her home in Ukraine to a Russian gulag when Bolsheviks targetted Jews following the outbreak of civil war in 1917

The two-time Oscar-winner was able to regain his composure and continue his tribute, saying, 'People ask me today: "What are you?"

'I say, "I'm a Jew." They all survived for me to be here.'

As a boy Dustin's father hid from his son the painful history his family had endured, however it was not until he appeared on the show that he learned about Libba.

Which no doubt helped give the actor perspective when he complained last week about the racism he says has always prevented ethnic minorities from flourishing at the Academy Awards.

He said: 'Well, it's always been that way. It's not anything new, like Chris Rock, I heard said, "Why this year?"'

'It's always been racism. It's kind of a reflection of what the country is.'

And he said only direct action will result in change in the casting of motion pictures.

Dustin said: 'We change when the people that are oppressed force it to change.'

Stars including director Spike Lee, who was getting a lifetime achievement award, and Will Smith boycotted this year's ceremony due to the lack of recognised minority stars.
