Alexander Santiago-Gonzales, ex of an orange jumpsuit.
The San Francisco County Jail is short an inmate today following yet another nighttime escape.
Authorities are scouring the city today for Alexander Santiago-Gonzales, who bolted from jail custody at about 8:45 p.m. Monday, according to a release from the Sheriff's Department.
Santiago-Gonzales, who has been in jail since last summer on a U.S. Marshal hold following a drug bust, was taking out the trash under the supervision of a sheriff's deputy when he took off running. He outran his jailer,
the second jail inmate to beat out a deputy in a trash night footrace in less than a year.
The 26-year old was last seen running down Harriet Alley towards Harrison Street, but he may be easy to spot: he reportedly shed his orange jumpsuit and
was last seen clad only in blue boxer shorts, broadcast news is reporting.
But what's another naked guy in South of Market anyway?
Santiago-Gonzales is described as a Pescadero resident and stands at 5-foot-6 inches tall and 180 pounds. Sheriff's deputies as well as San Francisco police and U.S. Marshals are actively looking for him as of Tuesday morning.
He's not considered armed but he did allegedly commit narcotics trafficking while in possession of a firearm, so there's that.
It would seem that jail inmates have identified a security flaw in Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi's Hall of Justice jail, as Santiago-Gonzales's tale of escape is strikingly similar to that of Timothy Midgett. Midgett also fled jail custody during a trash run last June, but he didn't go far:
his two-week run of freedom ended after he was discovered at a local homeless shelter.
Expect this recent run of escapees to come up during Mirkarimi's reelection bid this fall. That is, unless Mirkarimi starts hiring some sprinters to oversee the nightly trash run.
In the meantime, if you see a harried fellow in his underclothes, might be best to call the authorities.
