A controversial Instagram account listing attractive male Syrian and Afghan refugees has caused a backlash on social media, with people accusing the anonymous creator of objectifying a tragedy.

The 'Hot Migrants' Instagram account is dedicated to all the 'handsome men on their journey to Europe', reads the description. ‘Their countries might be falling apart but their sex appeal still goes strong,’ it continues. 

The account lists photos - all TV grabs - of about 20 'hot' refugees with captions like 'pretty in pink', 'waiting handsomely for a better life', 'migrant Wolverine' and 'quite the seductive stare'.

The pictures have triggered an angry reaction by some Instagram users, who called on the creator to delete the account.  

'This whole account is a f*****g mess - deliberate objectification and harmfully reductive commentary on people whose lives hang in the balance,' someone said.

However, the account was not created with bad intentions according to the anonymous user who .

‘I created this account after watching a video from the refugees and migrants who were stuck behind the border fence in Idomeni,' he said.

‘One of the people who was pleading for the borders to open caught my eye and I found myself recounting how many other times I pondered about some of these people’s fates.

‘These photos bring the realities a bit closer...It helps to cope with the situation.’
