'We're not bankrupt. We're fine!' Tori Spelling denies she's got money problems... after being sued over unpaid $37,000 credit card bill

She's been dogged by rumors that she's struggling financially, but Tori Spelling spoke out Thursday to deny she and husband Dean McDermott have money problems.

The 42-year-old was sued by American Express in January for failing to pay an outstanding credit card balance of $37,981.97, and she says she just wants 'that story to go away.'

'We're not bankrupt. We're not struggling. We're fine!' she told People.

The actress and reality star blamed the persistent gossip about her finances on being too truthful in her 2013 memoir Spelling It Like It Is, in which she talked about how difficult she has found it after receiving just $800,000 of her late father Aaron Spelling's $500 million estate.

'I thought I was being relatable, talking about how celebrities go through financial struggles, too,' she told People.

'We're not perfect. We have made a lot of choices financially with real estate that didn't work out,' she acknowledged. 'That just escalated into this story about financial struggles, bankruptcy. To this day that haunts me.'

Tori insisted that she and her family are really doing okay.

'My husband and I work really hard. I mean, I'm constantly out there working,' she said.

'It's so important for my children to see that both their parents are working, and we talk to them about it..... We talk about money.'

Growing up in Beverly Hills with her TV mogul dad, the former 90210 star didn't have to worry about paying the bills or how much she spent.

She said that didn't give her any sense of money management or prepare her for adult life where she'd have to be able to keep a check on her finances.

However, her mother Candy Spelling revealed in January that she is the one who picks up the tab for her daughter's home, the children's private schools and the family's grocery bills.

'I’ve been helping out and I’m paying all her bills now,' Candy, 70, told TMZ.

But Candy, who also has a son Randy, 37, from her marriage to Aaron, made it clear she wasn't about to start paying off debts Tori had run up on extras including the Amex bill.

'I’m not paying extras like that. I’m not paying any back payments – just for the house and the kids’ school and the food. That’s all,' she said.

And it's a pretty hefty bill that the wealthy widow is shelling out for.

Tori, Dean, 49, and their four kids recently moved to a new rental home in the LA suburb of Encino, just six months after leaving a house there for a gated community in Calabasas.

The 3,900 square feet home features five bedrooms and four bathrooms and rents for $7,500 a month.

It boasts a swimming pool, backyard barbecue, a media room and a gym.

The True Tori reality star insisted that the move wasn't for financial reasons, but to move back closer to her children's schools.

'The kids are in different schools right now: preschool, elementary school, they're moving, so we're trying to find the perfect area,' she said.

Meanwhile, things in her private life are looking up after she and Dean worked through his cheating on their marriage.

'We had to deconstruct our relationship. We really did,' she said during an appearance on NBC's Today.

She went on, according to UsWeekly: 'I feel like we're kind of turning monogamy on its head, flipping it and being like, 'Well ... through some fighting we've been told what life should be, what marriage should be.'

'I wanted the fairy tale,' she explained. 'And then when it wasn't, I was like, 'Well, what do I do? Divorce my husband? I have four kids.''

In May, the two, who were both married to other people when they met on the set of a TV movie in July 2005, will celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary.

They are parents to Liam, eight, Stella, seven, Hattie, four, and Finn, three, and Dean also has a son Jack, 17, from his first marriage.

Tori is due back on TV screens in the upcoming season of WEtv's series David Tutera's CELEBrations, and she, Dean and their children will appear in a Cooking Channel show , Tori And Dean's Spring Picnic.
