'We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.'

However, a representative for Tim Burton has moved to distance the director from the project, saying: 'Tim Burton did not confirm Beetlejuice 2 as the movie is not in development. Tim’s focus is entirely on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children set for a September 30 2016 release and developing Dumbo.'

News of the return of the obnoxious ghost, played by Keaton, 64, has been circulating for some time, with actress Winona Ryder, 44, appearing to confirm it during an interview with Seth Meyers last August.

She said: 'I think I can confirm it. It was very hush-hush top secret … but then (Tim Burton) was doing some press for ‘Big Eyes’ and and he did an on-camera interview and he said, "Oh yeah, we’re doing it, and Winona’s going to be in it" … If he said it, I can say it.'

'There’s only one Beetlejuice, and that’s Michael,' said Burton. 'There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever… I miss that character. There’s something that’s cathartic and amazing about it. I think it’s closer than ever.'

The iconic film revolves around deceased couple Barbara and Adam Maitland and their efforts to scare away the new family who move into their country home.

When their attempts prove unsuccessful, the couple summon the crude ghost Betelgeuse (Keaton) to help, but it soon becomes apparent that they've let themselves in for more than they bargained for.

Showstopping: Keaton only appeared on screen for 17 minutes in the original but every single one was memorable
