Governor closes STAR Academy juvenile facility near Custer; 64 jobs lost |

The population of wayward youth in the South Dakota corrections system has declined so much the state is shutting down one of the facilities that housed them — the STAR Academy facility near Custer. Gov. Dennis Daugaard said Wednesday the state will close STAR Academy, the state-run juvenile corrections facility near Custer, on April 8. The 64 employees working at STAR (State Treatment and Rehabilitation) Academy were notified yesterday of the decision to close the programs and were given layoff notices. “In a city where we have approximately 2,000 people, 64 jobs is a hit," said Custer Mayor Jared Carson.
