Xena: Warrior Princess reboot set to address romance between main characters as writer says their 'relationship will be fully explored'

It was the hit 1990s show about a warrior princess fighting evil with the help of her best friend.

And while fans of Xena: Warrior Princess will be familiar with all the innuendos, lingering looks and affection that hinted their bond was more than friendship, that's all about to change with the upcoming reboot.

It has been revealed this week that the TV series will be revamped to bring the two women - originally played by Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor - out of the closet.

NBC has reportedly ordered a new pilot from CW's The 100 writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach who has confirmed that this time round the show will be clear about the chemistry between Xena and Gabrielle.

During a Q&A on Tumblr this week, Grillo-Marxuach implied the women will be lovers.

He wrote: 'i am a very different person with a very different world view than my employer on the 100 - and my work on the 100 was to use my skills to bring that vision to life. xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons.

'there is no reason to bring back xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s.

He added: 'it will also express my view of the world - which is only further informed by what is happening right now - and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.'

Grillo-Marxuach was referring to the shocking plot twist in The 100 where he killed off lesbian character Lexa and angered devoted followers of the series.

LGBTQ viewers were outraged about losing Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and took to social media in protest, slamming show creator Jason Rothenberg.

The Hollywood Reporter announced in July that NBC Universal was in the early stages of planning a Xena reboot for this fall.

At the time it was reported they wanted Lawless for a role on-screen as well as part of production - but she has yet to confirm.

The same month Lawless, 46, and O'Connor, 45, were spotted posing for a selfie together, hinting that she may also have some involvement in the upcoming production.

Reports have suggested NBC want Lawless to have an onscreen role as well as in production. She is pictured in October at a screening for Ash vs Evil Dead
