The SADSEM network

sadsem training session

The SADSEM network comprises 11 tertiary partner institutions throughout the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It seeks to contribute to peace and security in southern Africa by strengthening the democratic management of its defence forces and other security organs. It does so primarily by offering specialised training programmes to police and military officers and others involved in managing defence and security in the region. It also undertakes research on defence and security issues, and helps governments in the region to develop defence and security policy.

Services and activities

The SADSEM network offers a range of services and activities, including:

  • Training courses offered in all SADC countries, based on common curricula, but utilising teaching methods that are responsive to local requirements.
  • Research and policy analysis, largely undertaken by network partners for SADC governments.
  • An internship programme for students from SADC member states who wish to gain experience at institutions active in the fields of defence and security.
