KALAMAZOO, MI -- Her head is bandaged but Abigail Kopf's smile is wide in a photo of her with her sister, sitting in her hospital bed, the first photo released since Abigail was shot in the head Feb. 20 in a mass shooting in Kalamazoo.

The Battle Creek girl was one of two people to survive the random shootings that killed six people. Tiana Carruthers of Kalamazoo is recovering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The photo was posted shortly before 6 p.m. on the girl's GoFundMe site, with the caption: "Abigail is pictured laughing in her bed with her sister."

The fund has raised $57,980 to help the family pay for expenses associated with her recovery.

Abigail has been transferred from Bronson Methodist Hospital to a rehabilitation facility in Grand Rapids. She spoke her first word to her family a few days ago.

Abigail's doctors have said the pace of her progress is "exceptional."
