Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), 42 U.S.C. §2000e-2, and the Tennessee Human Rights Act (THRA), Tenn. Code Ann. §4-21-401, prohibit workplace discrimination because of an individual’s race or national origin. Under these laws, employers cannot deny employment to, fire, demote, refuse to promote, or otherwise subject employees to harassment or retaliation because of their race or national origin.
