Jerry Seinfeld drives off with $22.2 MILLION after selling 17 of his prized classic cars

  • Comedian sold 15 Porsches and two Volkswagens for $22,244,500
  • Said he was selling his cars so that other collectors could enjoy them
  • One of the cars on sale was the same model that James Dean was driving when he fatally crashed in 1955

Everyone knows he's an auto enthusiast, as his Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee show proves.

But even Jerry Seinfeld needs to clean out his garage from time to time.

The 61-year-old sold 17 of his classic cars, mostly Porsches, at the weekend, netting a stunning  $22,244,500, the New York Daily News reported on Monday.

He put the pricey rides on the block at the three-day Gooding & Company’s auction in Nassau County, Florida, which kicked off on Friday.

Jerry's star 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder - the same model that James Dean was driving when he fatally crashed in 1955 - sold for $5.3 million.

A 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder racing car fetched $3 million.

And he set a world auction record by selling an original 1960 Volkswagen Beetle for $121,000, according to the NY Daily News.

The comic, who was at the auction on Friday, reportedly still has some 32 Porsches at home as well as other sought after marks.

But the sale still had many of his fans scratching their heads over why the millionaire decided to offload so many.

'I just love cars. And I still love these cars,' Jerry said back in January when he sold three Porsches. 'But it’s time to send some of them back into the world, for someone else to enjoy, as I have.'

RoadandTrack.com reported that Jerry didn't have the space to store any more cars or the time to take care of them, so he decided to let others appreciate the masterpieces.

On its way: Also up for grabs at the auction was this incredible rare 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider. The car appeared in Sophia Loren's Academy Award-winning movie Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow in 1963

The New York Daily News added speculation that he wanted to make room in his storage yard for yet more cars.

Meanwhile, the star incurred the wrath of his fans when he took his prized silver A356 Porsche out in the rain a week ago and posted a picture to prove it.

Many chided him for letting the classic car get wet, with one particularly irate enthusiast fuming: 'Do NOT drive a collectible 356 in the rain! That's what a f*****' Acura is for!!!'
