He must regret it now! Lupita Nyong'o reveals her prom date stood her up while making a stylish appearance on Seth Meyers' late night show

She's known for never setting a fashion-foot wrong on the red carpet.

But Lupita Nyong'o confessed that her poor sartorial choices brought about a past dating disaster, during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday.

The 33-year-old actress explained that she designed her own red and yellow outfit for prom - which she blames for her date simply not showing up.

The Star Wars: Force Awakens star is currently starring on Broadway in Eclipsed, but she made sure there was no risk that would be in the shade as she put on a dazzling display on the show.

She showed off her toned abs in a vibrant tangerine-coloured ensemble.

Her stunning figure was centre-stage in the cropped top and matching pleated flowing palazzo pants.

She teamed them with a satin orange blazer - and she had even tonally matched her footwear.

The 12 Years a Slave star added some giant earrings, and a dark, vampish manicure.

The Oscar winner also revealed to the host that she knits to keep her nerves in check before going on stage every night.

'I knit before I go on stage and it's very zen,' she told Seth.

Ripen up to a orange oversized blazer like Lupita

Lupita Nyong'o is a style icon that changes looks from a Prada princess to a classic American Ralph Lauren with just a flip of a switch. Perhaps it's because she's such an amazing actress that she can not only morph into different characters but so can her style.

As a bona fide member of Olivier Rousteing's 'Balmain Army' it's no surprise to find Lupita in an outfit from the Fall 2015 collection. We love the over-sized dimensions of the jacket and pleated pants but it's the juicy color that has our heads turning. If you do too then click (right) to buy a tailored version at Stylebop.

Or shop our edit of much more affordable oversized looks below. We love the jacquard satin fabric of the one by Elizabeth and James but the roomy one from Pinko Black would look amazing with some leather shorts for spring. Make sure to show a little bit of skin to balance the larger than life proportions of this kind of jacket.

Since the teenage stalled date, she has clearly found a stunning sartorial style - which she kept under wraps from Instagram followers ahead of her appearance.

Lupita posted a picture covered up by a long giant belted robe - with just a peek of orange coming out of the bottom hem.

She captioned the picture: '@latenightseth here I come!' before later posting a snap backstage outside her dressing room, with dark glasses sealing her A-List status.

On the image she wrote, 'Talking @eclipsedbway and my dating disaster with @latenightseth tonight at 12:35am on NBC. #checkitout.'

Her smash-hit play is set in 2003 and tells the story of five women near the end of the Second Liberian Civil War.

It is almost entirely set in a small one-room shack where three of the women are being held by the Commanding Officer of a rebel faction, who basically uses them as sex slaves.

Earlier this month Lupita penned a darling note to her 2.4 million Instagram followers as she captioned the image: 'A few things to know before you see ECLIPSED.'

First and foremost on her list, she mentioned that although it's the Mexi-Kenyan star's Broadway debut she has, in fact, played the role of The Girl before.

'I first played my character as an understudy in Drama School,' she revealed. 'I never went on, and I promised myself back then that I would play "The Girl" some day, somehow, somewhere, so it’s mind-blowing to get to do it on Broadway.'

She revealed that Eclipsed is the first ever play on Broadway to be performed, directed and written by all women, the latter task falling to The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira.
