'I was too old!' Olivia Wilde, 32, reveals why she missed out on The Wolf of Wall Street role that went to Margot Robbie

She was just 28 when The Wolf Of Wall Street began filming.

But Olivia Wilde has revealed she missed out on a role in the movie because she was 'too old.'

Talking to Howard Strern on his radio show, the 32-year-old first denied that she'd missed out on roles for being 'too beautiful'.

'The funniest thing I heard recently was, I heard that I was 'too sophisticated,' she said.

'I thought, 'Oh, that sounds nice. I like that feedback. I didn't get the part but I'm a very sophisticated person. And then I found out later they actually said old,' she said.

'I had auditioned unsuccessfully for 'Wolf of Wall Street...that was the one I was too old for.'

Although she didn't specifically name the role, the former House star appeared to be referring to Margot Robbie's breakout part in the Leonardo DiCaprio film.

Olivia said the woman who got the part 'kicked ass' and was 'perfect'.

And the actress said everything happens for a reason, because although she lost out on Wolf of Wall Street, director Martin Scorsese ended up casting her in Vinyl instead.

'It shows that if you don't get something, a job interview or whatever you do for a living, it might lead to something else,' she said.

The actress told Stern on Tuesday that she used a merkin, or pubic wig, while filming racy nude scenes for Sunday's episode of HBO show Vinyl, which is set in the 1970s music business.

'We all wear merkins, because, it's the 70s,' the 32-year-old said as she stopped by The Howard Stern Show. 'I think it does make you feel less naked.'

'People can't see as much,' she added.

'You're wearing a little fur bikini...I was walking around to the whole crew going, 'look at this,' said Olivia, who described herself as 'pretty clean' in real life.

'They fit you and they make it and they let you choose the consistency and the color,' she explained.

'It's huge,' she said of the wigs. 'No one today is capable of wearing a 70s bush.'

And the actress, who shares a one-year-old son Otis Alexander with fiance Jason Sudeikis, also revealed how the actor piqued her interest with a 'mysterious' pick-up line at an SNL after-party.

'Just the greatest line of all time that Jason had,' she said.

'He came up to me... right up in my face and said 'Whatever you're looking for, you don't need it,' and he walked away.'

'I think he sensed I was this girl who was standing there, and I looked kind of lost,' the former House star said.

'I was like 'I'm at another party, I don't really know what I'm doing, I'd hit rock bottom with dating,.'

'He's smooth,' she said of the 40-year-old.

'It was so mysterious, that's why I liked it. And he didn't even try to pick me up, he just walked away.'
