Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino 'trusts' England staff to look after his stars with Premier League title racing hotting up

Mauricio Pochettino says he trusts the England coaching staff to look after his players and not run them into the ground during the upcoming international fortnight.

As Spurs chase their first league title in 55 years, Pochettino expects at least six players to be called up by Roy Hodgson for the friendly matches against Germany in Berlin on March 26 and Holland at Wembley three days later.

Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Ryan Mason and Danny Rose could all be selected when Hodgson announces his squad on Thursday and all are expected to feature at some point in the friendly double-header with one eye on Euro 2016.

But Pochettino is confident they will all return to domestic duties with a clean bill of health as Spurs attempt to chase down Leicester City and win the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of their Europa League return leg with Borussia Dortmund on Thursday evening, Pochettino said: ‘With the staff from the national team, we always give advice and information for them to manage the players but you never say you need to do this or that.

‘We have confidence and trust in them to care and look after our players. When they have international opportunities, to play at the Euros, it is difficult for them because it is against our interest. But they need to play and show quality.

‘An injury is always an accident and not what you want. For me, all the managers for the national team, they have the capacity to look after the player and it is difficult to stop some accidents happening.

‘It's important for us to trust them and them to trust us.’

Pochettino says it remains a possibility Spurs can overturn their three-goal deficit from the disastrous first leg in Dortmund last week but admitted his team need to show a lot more character and quality.

He said: ‘The important thing is to compete and show better quality than we showed last Thursday. We need to play well and show we are a much better team. But it will be difficult to turn the tie as Dortmund are a good team.

‘It was a very bad day for us and we need to learn, the squad is very young. We cannot repeat this again.’

If that doesn’t happen, however, Pochettino believes the Bundesliga side can go on and win the Europa League.

He said: ‘They are one of the favourites because Dortmund have the level of playing in the Champions League. Last season was difficult for them but they have shown more this season and are fighting Bayern for the Bundesliga.

‘They show more the limit of the Champions League than the Europa League and they can win it if we don’t stop them.’
