Manchester United drew 1-1 with Liverpool in their Europa League last-16 second leg tie at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, as Louis van Gaal's home side lost 3-1 on aggregate.

Anthony Martial gave the Red Devils hope from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, before Philippe Coutinho equalised on the stroke of half-time with a fine individual effort.

Here, Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler rates the performances of every player that featured for both sides at the Theatre of Dreams.

MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1)

DAVID DE GEA 6 – Could have done better to narrow the angle for Coutinho’s goal having earlier made a great save to deny the Brazilian.

GUILLERMO VARELA 6 – A threat going forward down the right again but was beaten too easily when Coutinho scored the equaliser.

CHRIS SMALLING 7 – Another commanding performance from the England defender, meeting everything head on.

DALEY BLIND 5.5 – Looked very shaky on occasions. Booked for taking down Sturridge after he was beaten all ends up by the striker.

MARCOS ROJO 7 – His excellent interception led to United’s first goal but he missed a clear chance to score a second.

MICHAEL CARRICK 6 – His composure was important on a frantic night but could have got tighter on Can in the build-up to Liverpool’s first.

MAROUANE FELLAINI 6 – A thorn in Liverpool’s side again – and an arm in Firmino’ s face. He has to stop doing that.

JESSE LINGARD 6 – Had the best of the early chances with a close-range header that was saved. Should have buried it.

JUAN MATA 6.5 – Popped up all over the place in the opening exchanges. Could have done better with a volley past the post.

ANTHONY MARTIAL 7 – United’s danger man. High and wide with an early chance but then won and scored the penalty.

MARCUS RASHFORD 6.5 – Still a bit rough around the edges on is seventh start but gave everything and caused problems.

Subs: VALENCIA 6 (for Varela 46), DARMIAN 6 (for Rojo 62), SCHWEINSTEIGER 6 (for Carrick 70).

Manager: LOUIS VAN GAAL 6.5 – A huge night in his reign and United gave it more of a go than usual but wasn’t enough.

LIVERPOOL (4-2-3-1)

SIMON MIGNOLET 6.5 – Smart save from Lingard’s header came at a vital time. Had little chance with the penalty.

NATHANIEL CLYNE 5 – Started the game very well but gave away the penalty with a clumsy challenge on Martial.

DEJAN LOVREN 6.5 – Stood strong in the face of pressure, even when it meant taking a forearm in the face from Fellaini.

MAMADOU SAKHO 7 – Solid throughout though perhaps a little fortunate to get away with trip on Rashford in the box.

JAMES MILNER 6 – Decent job at left back in place of the injured Moreno. Got forward well at times too.

EMRE CAN 7 – A composed, mature performance and played a key role in Liverpool’ s equaliser.

JORDAN HENDERSON 6 – Will be relieved that his miss with only De Gea to beat in the first half did not prove costly.

ADAM LALLANA 5 – Struggled to get into the game at times as Liverpool came under sustained pressure.

ROBERTO FIRMINO 6 – Couldn’t add to his vital goal at Anfield but went close with one effort from 25 yards.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO 8 – Wonderful piece of skill to kill the tie off, having brought a great save from De Gea and set up Henderson.

DANIEL STURRIDGE 6.5 – Hit the bar with a free-kick after bamboozling Blind. Important outlet to relieve pressure.

Subs: ORIGI 6.5 (for Sturridge 68), ALLEN 6 (for Henderson 71), BENTEKE (for Firmino 85).

Manager: JURGEN KLOPP 7 – Had his team well drilled for a huge night and they didn’t let him down. Deserved winners overall.

Referee: MILORAD MAZIC 6.5 – A bit picky which meant the game didn’t always flow but got the one big decision right, awarding United a penalty for Clyne’s foul on Martial.
