'I was alone and cornered': Kate Nash speaks out on sexual assault incident in her own home as she encourages women to share their stories in emotional post

Kate Nash has claimed she was sexually assaulted in her own home by a stranger earlier this week.

Writing an emotional post on her Instagram page on Friday, the 28-year-old singer went public on an incident in which she was 'cornered' in her bathroom and 'groped' by a man.

Accompanying the post with a picture of herself in shades and dangling a cigarette from her mouth, she explained that she had deliberately chosen a 'ridiculous' shot to show that assault can happen to all women, and you do not have to 'look like a victim'.

Speaking to her 56,000 Instagram followers in a bid to encourage other women to share their stories, she bravely wrote: '2 days ago I got groped in my own house by a man I don't know.

'I was alone & cornered in a bathroom & extremely threatened.'

A representative for Kate Nash has been contacted by MailOnline for further comment.

In the post, she went on to explain her feelings on how women are being encouraged to keep quiet and implored others not to hide 'when they get violated'.

Kate continued: 'We are scared to come forward because we don't want to cause trouble or a scene. We don't want to talk about heavy s**t & make ppl feel uncomfortable.'

The musician described how women are often told 'they were asking for it' or accused of making it up, which makes it harder to come forward.

'I'm tired of feeling that way,' she went on. 'Talking about these issues can a) help to prevent them in the future & b) make us feel stronger, more supported & safer.'

Explaining why she had chosen the accompanying image of herself she wrote: 'I'm also teaming this statement with a photo of me looking like a total & ridiculous G shot by @abaxley because I don't like the usual imagery associated with assault, we don't have to look like a victim to be one.
