FTSE CLOSE: London shares finish flat as US sees flurry of mergers and buyouts; oil price sticks at $41
The FTSE 100 closed down 5.06 points at 6184.58 amid thin volumes ahead of this weekend's Easter break. A burst of corporate takeover activity in the US saw Marriott International raise its bid to acquire Starwood Hotels, and other deals announced in the paint and financial data sectors. 'It has been a choppy day in markets with stocks, bonds and oil all fluctuating between gains and losses,' said one City expert.

MONEY NEWS & ADVICE
Budget calendar: From tax allowances to Lifetime Isas - when Osborne's key changes kick in between now and 2019
Our handy timeline shows the Chancellor's key moves from now to 2019. Next month personal allowances rise. And next year sees the introduction of a new pound coin that will combat fraud. And in 2018, low income workers will be offered Help to Save accounts with a Government bonus of up to £600 if £50 a month is put away for two years.
Top 10 European airlines revealed: No UK firm makes it onto list of travellers' favourite carriers
Luxembourg's Luxair was ranked number one, with an average score of 4.11 out of five for last year. The airline was highly regarded for the cleanliness of its aircraft, in-flight entertainment and cabin crew, the online firm said. Austrian Airlines took second place with a rating of 4.08, while Swiss International Air Lines was third with 4.06. Flybe was the highest rated UK carrier in 16th place with an average rating of 3.89 out of five.
The perils of the single first-time buyer: Those buying a home alone face a 13-year wait to save deposit
But the 'time to save' report by estate agents Hamptons International found that buying with someone else as a couple typically shaves around 10 years off the time it takes to get on the housing ladder. Couples in London face an eight-year wait to save enough for a deposit, compared with single people who face a wait of around 45 years and nine months, it found. Meanwhile, although the majority of Britons want to own their own home, 'generation rent' is giving up on getting on the property ladder, according to housing charity Shelter.
TONY HETHERINGTON: Returns of £2k a week? Stay well clear of binary options firms
You might be interested in the letter I had from TB Options Limited, following a cold call. It offers binary options with amazing returns of up to £2,000 a week if I invest £10,000. As you will see from the copy of the letter I am sending, TB Options does not give its address or phone number. I get the impression it does not wish to be traced. I would not touch this with a bargepole.
Where can you have a weekend city break for just over £110 all in? The cheapest European destinations revealed
The recent fall in sterling against the majority of European currencies means that prices are up in 80 per cent of cities, but holidaymakers can still pocket a weekend city break for a little bit more than £100 if they head east. Cities in Eastern Europe fill eight of the top 10 places in the annual barometer of costs by Post Office Money, which compares prices in 35 European cities.
Stock market losses are threatening my pension nest egg - should I cash in or switch up my investments?
I had £44,000 in shares, but in the last few months I have seen the amount go down by nearly £4,000.What advice would you give, as only my Neil Woodford shares are holding up. My Hargreaves Lansdown multi-manager portfolio, Royal Mail and Polar Capital Biotechnology shares are losing interest. Should I cash in, transfer to a building society or move the shares to somewhere else? I am recently retired, and these shares were my pension pot.

Up to 330 Argos stores could shut if Sainsbury's seals £1.4bn takeover of Home Retail Group, analysts claim
The supermarket giant's bid, made on Friday, is an attempt to compete with online rivals such as Amazon and help both businesses compete on the High Street. Analysts at French bank BNP Paribas have calculated that if it goes ahead, then 330 of Argos's 840 stores would be replaced with concessions inside Sainsbury's stores.
Ex-BP boss Lord Browne's emotional plea to remain in EU: My mother survived Auschwitz - that's why I know we must never go back to fighting in Europe
By now the public is used to business leaders making the cold, hard economic case for staying in or leaving the European Union. But Lord Browne, once hailed as Britain's pre-eminent businessman, makes an unabashed emotional plea. Browne, however, is very cautious of making the case purely about what is good for business in a one-dimensional way. He suggests that blue-chip business leaders need to stop looking like they are pro-Europe just because it helps them commercially, but because it is good for everyone.
SMALL BUSINESS: NEWS, TIPS AND SUCCESS STORIES
Experts warn big firms should be braced for tax hikes in order to shoulder burden of George Osborne's 'small business Budget'
The Chancellor said on Wednesday that local authorities would be compensated for their loss of revenue from small firms. But analysis by property consultants including Colliers International has raised the alarm that this could be reaped from other companies. After years of campaigning for businesses, particularly small shops, to be given a lighter rates burden, the Chancellor announced last week that small firms would receive concessions.

Bank fraud leaps by a quarter to £755m in just one year - and scammers are targeting bigger amounts with ever-craftier tricks
A growing army of criminals, often working in gangs, are targeting personal and business banking customers remotely to drain current accounts, evidence suggests. There was a worrying rise in the number of victims of internet and telephone banking fraud in 2015, according to new data from Fraud Action UK.
SIMON LAMBERT: The Lifetime Isa is a clever idea, especially if you're one of the real Budget winners
The Lifetime Isa is a cross between even more help to buy and the aborted pension Isa plan and it's a clever idea for both savers and the Chancellor. The former no longer have to prioritise a home or retirement and the latter will hope to save money. But there's one select group who are the real Budget winners.
REBECCA RUTT: 80% of us don't claim when our train is delayed - but I've got a simple solution
If I had a pound for every time I've been delayed on a train across the UK I would be a very rich woman. The same can't be said for the times I've actually claimed for said delayed trains. Now while this is partly due to the fact I'm the kind of person who rarely gets to the end of a 'to-do' list, it's also due to the ridiculously over-complicated system for claiming said delays.
The accidental entrepreneurs: How these social media stars turned their hobby into a business
Social media is a big part of many people's lives - but rather than letting it drain their time, these entrepreneurs have launched a career off their online obsession. Zanna van Dijk launched a modelling career off her Instagram which focuses on fitness and healthy living (left) while Bee Berrie (inset) built her baking business of the popularity of her pictures. Marc Hayden spent a decade working in technology for Apple before launching a photography career, again using Instagram as a tool to get exposure. He now has 80,000 followers. One of his images is pictured, right.
