'He likes dressing up as a lady': Rod Stewart confesses his son Aiden, 5, has a penchant for mum Penny Lancaster's clothes... and doesn't mind if he 'turns out to be gay'

A fan of zany suits and skin-tight trousers, Rod Stewart has never been one to blend in with his clothing choices.

And it seems his five-year-old son is following in his footsteps.

The rock star has revealed his youngest boy is currently going through a phase of 'dressing up as a lady'.

Speaking proudly about the achievements of some of his eight children, the musician said he is not yet sure what lies ahead for Aiden.

Stewart, 71, said it would be okay with him if his son was to one day announce he is gay, adding 'as long as he's happy'.

The former Faces band member – known for his own eccentric dress sense – has eight children by five different women, including Aiden and ten-year-old Alastair with current wife Penny Lancaster, 45.

Speaking to The Interview People, he joked his oldest son Sean, 35 – by first wife Alana Hamilton – is 'a good footballer, not great' who wants to open a nightclub, and that his other son Liam, 21, – by second wife Rachel Hunter – is a professional hockey player for a team in Alaska.

But speaking about the future ambitions of Aiden, he said: 'And the little one, I don't know yet. He likes dressing up as a lady. So we don't know which way he's thinking.'

The musician, who is worth an estimated £120million, explained his youngest son enjoys wearing his mother's clothes, and said: 'He's always dressing up like Mary Poppins. Hopefully he'll grow out of it.'

He then added: 'If he turns out to be a homosexual, that's okay with me. As long as he's happy.'

Aiden is not the only celebrity youngster who enjoys wearing clothes designed for the opposite gender. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's daughter Shiloh, nine, is frequently pictured wearing boys clothing and reportedly prefers to be called John.

During a recent trip to Disneyland, singer Adele was seen pushing her son Angelo, three, in a pushchair while he was dressed up as a fairytale princess. And when Celine Dion's son Nelson was two, she shared a picture of him dressed up in her high heels which she said he 'loves wearing.'

In the same interview, rocker Stewart, who in his youth was tipped for stardom as a professional footballer, revealed the fitness regime he now uses to stay in shape after a series of knee injuries stopped him playing the game.

The morning routine, which he does three times a week, sees him lifting weights, cycling and running for three quarters of an hour in what he describes as a 'high intensity cardio workout.'

Stewart said: 'I'm sure there are some fitter than me, but it's, you know, as I probably know, I played football all my life. I can't play anymore. So I try to keep myself as fit as I can. Just because of what I do on the stage, you know, it helps.

'I do it all the time. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And then I've been doing it for like 14 years now.'

He also spoke about how much he is enjoying song writing in the later stages of his career. He said: 'Song writing was something that I thought had left me but has come back with a vengeance and I'm entirely enjoying the procedure.

'And I'm very happy that I've got eight wonderful kids, and two young kids, and I've got a gorgeous wife and a good career and good health so far. So life has been very good to me thus far.'

Gushing about what he loves most about Miss Lancaster, the musician added: 'Well, apart from the obvious attributes, I mean she's a Londoner, and that's the first time I've been married to a British girl.

'She has a wonderful loving spirit about her. She's very understanding. She's a great mother. She's a great friend. She's everything I could possibly ask for. And we're very, very, very happy together.'

Stewart had his first child in 1963 with art student art student Susannah Boffey. Their daughter, Sarah Streeter, was raised by adoptive parents but in later life she has reconciled with her father. With his first wife Alana Hamilton, he has daughter Kimberly, 36, and son Sean, 35.

He then had Ruby Stewart, now 28, by long-term girlfriend Kelly Emberg. By his second wife Rachel Hunter, he has daughter Renee, 23, and son Liam, 21. He married model Penny Lancaster in 2007. They have sons Alastair, 10, and Aiden, five.
