Laura Carmichael stuns in a semi-sheer LBD as she steps out with boyfriend and Downton co-star Michael Fox for the first time at the Empire Film Awards 2016

There were rumours they were dating in January after hitting it off on Downtown Abbey.

And Laura Carmichael and Michael Fox seemed to confirm all the hype as they made their first public appearance as a couple at the Empire Film Awards 2016 on Sunday night.

The 29-year-old actress stunned in a frothy black LBD with a sheer neckline while her handsome beau looked dapper in a smart suit at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

Laura - famous for playing Lady Edith Crawley in Julian Fellowes' period drama hit - took to the red carpet in frivolous layered black midi dress.

Obviously keen to leave her former character's 1920s wardrobe firmly in the past, her frock featured a very modern sheer top-layer, which also included a large frilled embellishment on the neckline.

The A-line dress, which finished just at the knees, also featured high cinched-in waistline sheer-paneling on the decolletage.

She subtly accentuated her figure with a pair of strappy black stiletto shoes, which suited her understated yet stylish theme to a tee.

Strap down your style with Laura's Valentino shoes

Laura Michael put on a very stylish display at the Empire Film Awards wearing a gorgeous ruffle feature dress and some simple ankle-strap heels.

We loved the sheer material of her dress and although it was an outfit devoid of color, the ruffle feature added some red-carpet worthy pizazz into the look.

Continuing her fuss-free approach to dressing, the actress teamed her LBD with some simple but stunning heels by Valentino featuring a delicate ankle-strap.

Click right to buy these heels from Barneys: although they've got a large price-tag, they are so versatile that the cost per wear makes them worth splashing out on.

The stunning star wore her blonde hair in gentle waves down past her shoulders from an off-centre parting, whilst she only chose to define her eyes with a flash of mascara and her lips with slick of pink lipstick.

And her former Downton co-star Michael Fox proved they make one seriously well-dressed couple as he looked exceptionally suave in a classically tailored Prince Of Wales check suit.

He rocked a navy tie and waistcoat and finished off the dapper ensemble with patent shoes, contrasting the sophisticated look with a hint of stubble and subtly gelled hair.

In the ITV1 period drama, the actress portrays aristocratic Lady Edith Crawley, while the actor plays her lowly illiterate servant Andy Parker.

But despite the gulf in class on screen, the couple struck up a romance in real-life, with a source telling the Sun in January that Laura and Michael really hit it off during filming last year, and their relationship has now moved beyond friendship.

The insider said: 'They started off as mates but quickly realised there was chemistry there and decided to start dating.

'It’s very early days still but they are really enjoying each other’s company. The best part is that since the show ended they have had a lot more time to spend with each other.'

'Before that, most of their time together was at work.'

Carmichael was a stalwart of the award-winning period drama having starred as Lady Edith from the very first episode.

Meanwhile, Michael joined the cast for the penultimate series where he played the Crawley family's servant.

Downton came to an end after six wildly successful series in December 2015, with the Christmas episode.

And Lady Edith, after suffering more than her fair share of heartbreak throughout the duration of the show, finally found herself lucky in love.
