  • Palmer is unable to take his customary Masters tee shot next month

Rory McIlroy was all smiles as he spent time with Arnold Palmer after playing in the annual tournament hosted by the golfing legend.

The 26-year-old had a topsy-turvy time in Orlando, where he finished T27 despite a stunning final round of 65.

Despite the disappointment in Florida, the Northern Irishman posed alongside the 86-year-old at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club and Lodge following the tournament's conclusion.

He said on Instagram: 'Really enjoyed my week at Bay Hill. Would liked to have played better but always a pleasure spending time with Mr Palmer. #TheKing.'

Unfortunately for Palmer, he didn't take part in the traditional ceremony opening tee-shot, alongside honourary starters Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

The four-time Masters champion has been forced to curtail golfing activities since hurting his shoulder back in 2014.

ARNOLD PALMER MAJOR HONOURS

Masters: 1958 (w), 1960 (w), 1962 (w), 1964 (w)

US Open: 1960 (w)

The Open: 1961 (w), 1962 (w)

PGA Championship: 1964 (T2), 1968 (T2), 1970 (T2)

McIlroy endured a frustrating time at Bay Hill, where two disappointing rounds of 75 ruled him out of contention early on.

And for McIlroy, he knows that his own mentality on the course plays a part in his inconsistency.

He said: 'I've got to stop being so angry and not let the mistakes linger, because they're clearly leading to more mistakes.'

Australian golfer Jason Day took home the honours after beating Kevin Chappell by one shot.
