Up in the smoke? Zayn Malik reveals he thinks smoking marijuana helps with the 'creative process'

Zayn Malik has revealed that he thinks smoking marijuana can help him when it comes to his 'creative process' as a musician.

The 23-year-old Mind of Mind singer sensationally explained that he has been smoking the Class B drug for a 'while', but insists he doesn't want his use of the substance to influence his fans.

Speaking in-depth about his life post-One Direction, Zayn explained why he sometimes smoked marijuana (also known as weed), saying: 'It helps sometimes with the creative process, if you're smoking a good weed.'

In the interview with NME the BeFoUr hit-maker opened up about his use of the controversial and banned substance, admitting: 'I've probably been smoking [it] for a while.'

However while he admitted that he sometimes turned to 'good weed' for creative inspiration - presumably while writing music - he was at pains to explain he wasn't publicly endorsing it.

'I don't wanna say when I started because I don't want to influence anyone else,' he stated as the signer hesitantly opened up about his use of the drug. 'That's just something I do myself.'

The revelation will come as little surprise to his fan base, however, as the star has shared candid snaps of himself smoking what appears to be suspicious-looking cigarettes in the past.

In September 2015 he managed to anger some of his fans with his apparent use of the drug, when he shared a brazen photo of himself blowing smoke into the camera of his phone.

In the black and white image, Zayn can be seen sat in a chair, blowing a thick and languid plume of smoke into the air.

Though the picture caused some friction amongst his fan base, as the former One Direction star's blaze show made some of his 8.2million followers concerned for his health.

At the time, it appeared some of Zayn's followers feared for his well-being, as it was only a matter of months since he sensationally parted ways with the globe-conquering 1D.

One wrote in the comments: 'WHY IS HE DOING THIS TO US?!'

While another follower added: 'Zayn, we love and care for you, every single one of us. We care for your health, so please please stop smoking.'

And their heartfelt pleas continued, with another riled-up fan writing: 'Omg [Oh my God].... Do you want to kill us???? I love you so much.'

However the star has not been one to hide his use of the substance, as in 2014 - while he was touring with One Direction in South America - the singer was caught up in a drugs scandal with former bandmate Louis Tomlinson.

In the footage obtained by MailOnline in May 2014, Louis narrated from behind the camera, laughingly announcing: ‘So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!’

The pair then smoked what appeared to be a joint in the back of a moving vehicle.
