Broken engagements, drugs, and nudity, oh my! 10 years after Disney's Hannah Montana debuted, how Miley Cyrus went from PG to X-rated, while most of her co-stars simply fell out of the spotlight

Nobody knew just what a phenomenon Hannah Montana would become when it debuted on the Disney channel ten years ago today - let alone that it would produce one of the world's biggest pop stars.

Yes, it has officially been a full decade since Miley Cyrus et al debuted on the small screen to the glee of teens everywhere, eventually going on to span four seasons and 98 episodes all about the regular teen who led a double life as a pop star. 

But while we all know what would later become of the wholesome teen idol Miley, FEMAIL is taking a look back at the Disney hit show and hunting down the other members of the cast to see how they have weathered the intervening years.

By the time Hannah Montana concluded, Miley Cyrus was not only a household name, but had already made forays into pop stardom herself with albums including Meet Miley Cyrus, Breakout and Can't Be Tamed - the latter of which, released in 2010, made the first moves towards establishing a more mature image for the star.

However, despite the success of her records, Miley decided to take a break from music to focus on her acting, starring in films including LOL and So Undercover. But the critics were not kind on Miley's acting chops and she was soon making a legendary musical comeback.

In 2012, Miley became engaged to actor Liam Hemsworth, who she had met while starring in the 2009 film The Last Song and who she describes as her 'first serious boyfriend' - although Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey once claimed that Miley was his first kiss, aged just nine, and she also confirmed that she dated fellow Disney icon Nick Jonas for two years.

The following year in 2013, Miley began to completely overhaul her image, starting with chopping off her long locks into a short, platinum blonde pixie cut and began morphing into the tongue-lashing, red-lipped twerking sensation the world knows today.

Soon after releasing her hit single We Can't Stop and starring in an incredibly controversial twerk and grinding-filled performance with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Awards, it was revealed that Miley and Liam had ended their engagement.

Longtime love: Miley met Liam Hemsworth when both starred in 2009 film The Last Song and were engaged in 2012, just to split the next year. However, the pair are apparently back on

That same year, Miley became an outspoken advocate of smoking marijuana, sharing images of her own homemade bongs and talking about her love for 'happy drugs' in an interview with Rolling Stone - this on top of her increasingly sexualized public image caused quite an uproar among her Hannah Montana fan base. 

But the new persona turned out to be a profitable one for Miley as her fourth album Bangerz rocketed to the top of the Billboard charts.

Since breaking up with Liam in 2013, Miley has been linked to the likes of producer Mike Will Made It, Kellan Lutz and Jared Leto, but eventually went public with Patrick Schwarzenegger, whom she dated for a few months between 2014 and 2015.

Miley, who is pansexual, was also linked to Victoria's Secret model Stella Maxwell last year shortly after splitting from Patrick. The pair were seen kissing while on a break while filming a music video and even spotted at Disneyland together. 

However, in a new twist, it was recently revealed that Miley and her longtime love Liam are making another go of things, with the pop star and the actor spotted moving in together. The news was properly confirmed, though, when Miley's own godmother Dolly Parton told an interviewer: 'I was excited to hear they got back together.' 

As for the 10-year anniversary, 23-year-old Miley today shared a message with her fans along with an image of her lying on the floor in a long blonde wig.

'Sending love to all my cast members on this anniversary,' she wrote. 'To the world it's a celebration of 10 years but for us the journey began way before the world had any clue who the f*** any of us are. 

She added: 'Even though I feel disconnected to who I was at that time I will always feel eternally grateful for the opportunity and platform I was given.'

To the potential dismay of long-time Hannah Montana fans, however, Miley delivered something of a violent blow to the hopes and dreams of anyone who was holding out hope for a reunion episode. 

'I am where I am because of loyal fans that I am thankful for and of course love dearly all the new angels who support me now..... Even though [Hannah Montana] is chopped up into little tiny pieces and buried in my backyard she will always hold a very special place in my heart! 

She then offered some rather grown-up advice to her fans about how they can honor the memory of Hannah: 'Celebrate this day with us! Get real drunk and remember #HM4EVR'

EMILY OSMENT (LILLY TRUSCOTT)

Lilly - or as Hannah Montana's friends knew her, Lola - was Miley's best friend in the Disney program, played by none other than Emily Osment, little sister of another child star, Haley Joel Osment. 

Following the end of the program, Emily stayed in the business, doing voice overs for Beverly Hills Chihuahua two and three and recently displayed her impressive acting chops as a drug addict on CBS' Mom opposite Allison Janey.

But just after Hannah Montana aired its last episode, Emily also had a go at a bit of a music career before enrolling in college to study for a few years and eventually returning to TV. Now 24, she is currently starring as Gabi Diamond in the sitcom Young & Hungry.

Romantically, she was previously linked to costar Mitchell Musso, but has most recently been dating actor Blake Cooper Griffin. 

Sharing her own celebration of the anniversary, Emily shared an image of herself, Miley and costar Mitchel Musso when they were just youngsters.

'Yes, this is what 14 year olds used to look like, no teeth no worries,' she wrote. 'Thank you to everyone who stuck with us all these years, we couldn't have done it without you, and hopefully Mitch still has his "STOP" belt buckle-because fashion.' 

JASON EARLES (JACKSON STEWART)

Miley's onscreen brother has kept quite close to the Disney family since ending his run on Hannah Montana. 

The actor was already in his late 20s when he took on the role of teenage Jackson and was, in fact, already married as well to Jennifer Earles in 2002. The pair eventually split in 2013 with one daughter, Noah.

The 38-year-old has starred in Disney XD series Kickin’ It from 2011 until last year and also provided voice overs for a variety of Disney projects, including Fish Hooks, Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja and Shorty McShorts' Shorts.

MITCHELL MUSSO (OLIVER OKEN) 

Like Jason, Mitchell stayed close to Disney following his run as Oliver, the third best friend alongside Miley and Lilly on Hannah Montana. 

Since 2007, Mitchell has provided a recurring voice role to Disney Channel cartoon, Phineas and Ferb and from 2010 to 2012 starred in Pair of Kings, another Disney XD offering. He also briefly hosted hidden camera show PrankStars.

However, life was not without its bumps in the road for Mitchell as, in 2011, he was busted for underage DUI aged just 20 after being pulled over by police in Burbank, California.

He was lucky to have only been sentenced to 36 months of informal probation, plus a fine and a required alcohol education class, releasing a statement after the fact saying he 'learned first hand that stepping up and taking responsibility is the best way to move forward.'

His career took a hit, though, following the arrest. PrankStars was cancelled and his character was subsequently written out of Pair of Kings. 

Today, the 24-year-old is set to star in comedy film Characterz and also runs a YouTube channel with his brother Marc entitled MussoLive, which has over 35,000 subscribers.

MOISES ARIAS (RICO SUAVE)

The young spoiled surf shack manager who gleefully played cruel practical jokes on Miley and her friends was initially a recurring character who was upgraded to a lead cast member by the second season.

Moving on up: Moises' film career has been going from strength to strength and he is due to star in a supporting role in Ben Hur later this year

Sticking with kids TV in the years following the end of Hannah Montana, Moises appeared in the likes of Wizards of Waverly Place, The Suite Life on Deck and lent his voice to Phineas and Ferb.

However, Moises is probably most in the public eye of late because of his friendship with Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith's children Willow and Jaden.

The actor was landed in a bit of hot water in 2014 after an image was shared online featuring then 13-year-old Willow lying on a bed with Moises, then 20 years old.

The controversial black and white snap showed Moises shirtless with Willow slouched fully clothed in front of him.

The photo caused a media furor, with some reports saying that Jada and Will were even being investigated by Child Protective Services over the snap. 

Luckily for Moises, the whole thing eventually blew over and his film career has recently been going from strength to strength, with a role in the critically acclaimed indie film The Kings of Summer, one opposite Harrison Ford in Ender's Game and a voice role in Despicable Me 2.

Now 21, Moises will also have a supporting role in the upcoming epic Ben-Hur with Jack Huston in the lead role.

CODY LINLEY (JAKE RYAN)

Miley's onscreen boyfriend Jake left fans heartbroken when he cheated on her in season four, causing her to end their on-off relationship for good. 

But even before taking on the role, Cody Linley was already a seasoned actor with roles in classics like Cheaper By the Dozen and Miss Congeniality already under his belt. 

In 2008, he competed on Dancing With the Stars' seventh season, partnering with Julianne Hough and becoming the youngest male competitor in the show's history. He eventually placed fourth. 

Now 26, Cody has been keeping busy, bagging a role on Melissa & Joey and starring in supernatural horror flick Forget Me Not. He is currently filming for Sharknado 4 opposite Tara Reid and David Hasselhoff.

But life hasn't been all rosy for Cody over the years. He tragically lost his older brother, 29-year-old Chad Linley, to a heroin overdose in 2011.
