A defiant Madonna has angrily hit back at her New York City neighbors after Daily Mail Online reported their annoyance at her attempts to hog the parking in front of her $40m mansion.

The 57-year-old singer said on Instagram 'Yes Bishes I am Madonna and that is my driveway'  - after neighbors complained about her fake 'No parking' signs and yellow paint outside her Upper East Side home.

She was referring specifically to one neighbor who complained to Daily Mail Online about the singer's 'obnoxious' behavior.

Madonna went on to plead her case, with reference to her traffic woes, before issuing an apology of questionable sincerity.

'If people park in front of it i cant [sic] drive in my driveway! So sorry the city doesn't like the color yellow! We will paint a nice dull grey to keep our neighbors happy! Sorry! Im saying 3 extra Hail Mary's this Easter for this transgression!'

She has installed fake signage that includes a 'No parking' sign posted on the singer's security gate, and a 'Tenant parking only' sign mounted on a pole in a flower bed on the sidewalk.

Both signs threaten that 'unauthorized vehicles will be towed away.'

The pop icon's people also had the words 'No parking' imprinted along the edge of the sidewalk, and painted the curb yellow.

New York City Department of Transport officials told Daily Mail Online that the painting and writing on the curb could be illegal under laws that prohibit the defacing of city property by painting or making imprints.

A DOT spokesman also confirmed to Daily Mail Online that Madonna's 'No parking' sign in the flower bed outside her home was illegal and that the singer has been told to remove it.

'We can confirm we recently inspected this location and issued a letter of defacement,' a spokesman said.

Earlier on Thursday, neighbors had spoken to Daily Mail Online about the signs and painting outside the four-story Georgian-style townhouse.

MADONNA'S LIFE IN NEW YORK

The pop star, whose full name is Madonna Louise Ciccone, first moved to New York from Michigan when she was 19.

Her first apartment in the city was a four-story walk-up at 232 East 4th Street in the East Village, according to the New York Post

The Upper East Side townhouse was purchased for $40million in 2009, according to the Post, which quoted a broker as saying that no other residence in the area 'has ever sold for $20million, let alone $30million - or ever will again.'

The newspaper reported the property has 26 rooms, including 13 bedrooms, and 14 bathrooms - as well as 'a 3,000-square- foot garden, nine fireplaces, an elevator and a wine cellar with a grotto.'

'We've all been wondering for a while now if these signs are real and everyone on her street has just accepted them,' one said.

'At first we thought it made sense as often you see middle age fans trying to catch a glimpse of her, so it looked like she had a permit to have them so she could come and go without being annoyed. We're now troubled that they could be fake as this just seems so entitled.'

But the signs aren't the only way Madonna, 57, annoys her neighbors.

'What has angered us the very most is that when she leaves one of her staff literally walks into the street and stops cars and pedestrians from passing.'

'This way she can leave from inside the garage and not have to deal with the public,' a neighbor said.

'It's really quite obnoxious and we all joke that she is playing "Bitch I'm Madonna" as her chauffeured car drives her by all of us minions waiting on the street for her to pass.'

'The funny thing about this is that the Upper East Side is divided into two sections West of Lexington and East of Lexington. Madonna lives East of Lexington. West of Lexington is where the super-rich live and she would never get away with this if she lived there.'

'West of Lexington they'd all either bitterly complain or her neighbors would want the same thing too,'  the neighbor remarked. The story was first reported by TMZ

With the conclusion of Madonna's most recent tour, Rebel Heart, which wrapped up in Sydney on Sunday, the pop singer officially became the highest-grossing touring solo artist on record, according to statistics from Billboard released Wednesday.

The $169.8million she grossed during the 82-stop tour added up to a career total of $1.31billion earned since 1990. Number two on the solo artist list, Bruce Springsteen, has grossed a total of $1.25billion in the same period.
