He fathered four out-of-wedlock children by four different women – three of them called Mary – but only acknowledged the youngest son Michael Francis.

Now Mary Fleming, who is battling stage four breast cancer, has come forward in a desperate attempt to unite the four children and Sinatra Jr's sisters Nancy and Tina.

Divorcee Mary had no idea Sinatra Jr had already fathered two daughters, one just months before she gave birth, and actually turned down his half-hearted marriage proposal assuming they would eventually tie the knot.

Sinatra Jr insisted their son be named after him but then failed to keep his promise to be there when Francis Wayne was born in May 1978.

He immediately dropped out of Mary's life and embarked on an affair with his secretary Patricia Ward, producing another son, Michael Francis.

Mary, 67, believes the singer, who lived his entire life in his father's shadow, was motivated by fear and greed.

'Frank and I talked on the phone for years after our son was born, even though he wanted nothing to do with him,' she says.

'We always had good communication, we were never angry at each other. But I think he was afraid of what his family would think.

'When his father found out I was pregnant he [Frank Sinatra] called him to his house in Palm Springs, kept him there for two days and gave him hell.'

Mary was 28 and already the mother of a young daughter when she met Sinatra Jr at one of his shows in Pasadena, California. He was six years older.

'The maître d' let us go and get his autograph, then he flirted me through the show. My friend gave him my telephone number and he called a few days later,' she says.

'He tried to hide me at first, especially when I told him I was pregnant.

'Then he actually asked if I wanted to get married but he kept putting off telling his family, he was always away on tour.

'I was angry so I took some photographs, went to Los Angeles and asked staff if they would give them to Sinatra senior.

'Apparently Senior called Frank to his house and gave him hell for two days threatening to cut off his money.

'I had problems when my daughter Elizabeth was born and the doctor told me I would probably never get pregnant again. I didn't use birth control after that - even when I was married - and getting pregnant came as a shock to me.

'Frank asked if wanted to get married and I said it didn't matter, there was no real proposal just a "Do you want to get married?" I wanted to wait, I didn't think there was any hurry.

'I had no idea then that he already had two daughters, Francine and Natalie, by two other women.

'Now I wish I had said yes because there would have been an acknowledgment of our son.

'I could have used my father or brother's names for our son but Frank said he wanted his son to be named Francis Wayne after him.

'Two weeks before our son was born, when I was as huge as a whale, we were called into the Sinatra family's lawyers. They said I couldn't name him that, I said yes we had agreed.

'Frank walked me to the bathroom, a long walk down a corridor, and he said, "Mary, I am glad you are sticking to our son's name and that you want to name him after me."

'He was going to come to the hospital on the day our son was born but didn't, he said his father had threatened him.

'He claimed he was threatened by his family that if he didn't do what they said he would lose everything.

Sinatra Jr visited just once a few days later at the hospital, then went back on tour and never suggested meeting his son again.

Confused and upset, Mary concentrated on bringing up their son but lived for the odd phone call from her now ex lover.

Eldest: Daughter Francine was conceived towards the end of a four-year affair with Mary Wallner in 1972
Second: Sinatra paid alimony for his offspring, although in the case of Natalie Oglesby Skalla - he waited until she was due to attend college before striking a deal with her mother Mary Sue Oglesby

Then she discovered he had a daughter Francine with a woman called Mary Wollner. Bizarrely the two women briefly became friends and shared a house together with their children for six months.

'It turned out she was a very conniving woman, doing things behind my back. She only wanted Francine in Frank's life, so she caused trouble for me and Frank.

'She told me she had known Frank for years and they had lived together.

'I was very naive and shy then, she told me what to do and it was always the wrong thing. Once she suggested picketing Frank's house. I turned up but she didn't.'

At that stage, Mary had no idea he had also fathered a daughter called Natalie, named after his grandmother, by another lover called Mary Sue Ogelsby just before she gave birth to their son.

Then eight years later, Sinatra Jr's secretary Patricia Fisher gave birth to their son Michael Francis, the only child he ever acknowledged.

'I think Pat had too much information on him, she knew everything about Frank and I believe his dad told him to make it right by her,' she says.

When my dad came off stage I approached him and told him who I was. He was cold, muttered 'Oh, how are you?' and just brushed me off and walked away.

Sinatra Jr originally agreed to pay Mary $250 a month for their son but the money came in intermittently and eventually she turned to celebrity New York alimony lawyer Raoul Felder for help.

'Our son was 14 and as soon as he filed court papers, Frank agreed to paternity. Or at least he didn't oppose it. We'd done blood tests when our son was born but DNA had not been discovered then.

'Then when our son was 14 he said there was no need for DNA, he was admitting paternity, and the money was upped to $1,500 a month.'

Despite that, Sinatra Jr went to his grave claiming he had just one child, Michael.

Asked why she thought he refused to acknowledge the three older children, Mary says: 'I think it was about greed, I honestly do.

'It is greed, it is horrible. He feared losing more. Well, you can't take it with you.'

Incredibly, Mary stayed in touch with Sinatra Jr over the years - even when he snubbed their son.

'My son is not pushy but he wanted to meet his dad, he went to see him playing in Orange County and he went up to him but Frank walked away,' she says.

'Then Frank called me and said he had just left, that if he'd hung around he would have talked to him.

'I don't know if that was the case but I did suggest they get together. He would always say one of these days he would but he had to go on tour, there was always a lame excuse.'

Mary believes that Sinatra Jr's distant relationship with his own father caused many of his problems. And bizarrely she got some insight into that when she befriended Barry Keenan, who was jailed for kidnapping Junior when he was 19.

'I saw a TV thing about it and called up Barry. We had dinner and we are still friends to this day,' she says.

'Barry kidnapped Frank because he felt sorry for him. It was a daft thing, he and the other kidnappers were all doing drugs and they maybe thought his dad would finally pay attention to him. Even Frank Jr said Barry was very nice to him.

'But Frank was not happy over my friendship with Barry and wouldn't meet him. He said he could not afford to be seen out with him by the family.

'He didn't change after Frank Sr's death. He still sneaked around like a teenager.

'His family are greedy, snobby people, they don't want to know anyone outside the family.'

'But if it was me and thought I had a niece or nephew, I would want to meet him or her. Frank's sisters Nancy and Tina don't want to know.'

Mary admits that her son, who was baptized Francis but is known as Frank, originally hated his famous name.

'He used to get angry because people would ask if Frank Sinatra was his grandfather,' she says.

'I sheltered him too much. But I did worry about Senior's mafia connections. I wanted to protect my kid. He is a wonderful boy, one of the kindest kids.'

She is also upset that Michael, the only acknowledged heir, also snubbed her son and now hopes that all of the children can be reunited and share their father's $50 million estate.

'If there is a will, rather than a trust, all these kids, if they are blood heirs, need to contest the will,' she says.

'Maybe he has left them all something. I doubt it but who knows.'

Her son, who is 37 and twice divorced, admits he was an emotional mess when he heard about his father's death and is now keen to meet his half-siblings.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail Online, heartbroken Frank says: 'I felt very emotional when I learned my dad had died.

'I wasn't sure how I should feel. He was my father but I didn't know him.

'Mom says he came to the hospital to see me when I was born.

Failed attempts: 'I have not really tried to contact his family. When my father brushed me off I kind of gave up and got very depressed,' says Francis

'But that was it - the only time I have ever spoken to him he spent 45 minutes shouting at me when I was 19.'

He tracked down his errant dad and approached him at a supper club in Newport Beach, California, where he was singing.

'I told the maître d' I was his son and embarrassingly he made room for me at the table,' Frances says.

'When my dad came off stage I approached him and told him who I was. He was cold, muttered 'Oh, how are you?' and just brushed me off and walked away.

'Well that was it, I decided to hound him. My eldest half-sister Francine, who he also failed to acknowledge, had built up a bit of a relationship with him and went to the occasional family event and that is all I wanted.

'Eventually he phoned my mom and said if I had just waited around at that supper club he would have spoken to me. He claimed he had a second show that night but I didn't know that because he had just walked away.

'So I kept trying to contact him and eventually he came on the phone.

'He said I was his child by accident, we were strangers for two decades and shouldn't be friends now. This went on with him shouting for about 45 minutes.

'Then I tried to contact his other son Michael. I sent him a message years ago on MySpace but he blocked me, he has also blocked me on LinkedIn and Facebook.

'But I grew up with Francine, I think my father and Francine sometimes met up. Now I am hoping to reach out to Natalie too.

'Frank senior cut all four of us out of his will. But it is not about the money. It is about knowing my parent, a desire to know who that parent is. That's the most important thing.

'I have no idea if I am in my father's will, it would shock me if I was.

'I have not really tried to contact his family. When my father brushed me off I kind of gave up and got very depressed.'

Francis, who studied at film school but now works at Ticketmaster designing web pages and adverts, inherited his mother's red hair and green eyes and says he also missed out on his paternal family's musical skills.

'I don't sing at all. I don't think I have that talent, I only do karaoke for a joke,' he says.

'Because of my name wherever I go I get comments. It is a difficult thing when you are a young kid and have other kids asking questions.

'I used to wish I was not Frank Sinatra 3 but in the last 20 years I have been living my life so it's a little easier. My friends call me Frank but professionally, and all my bills, I am Francis.

'It is sad that my father refused to acknowledge me properly. He admitted paternity in court when I was 14 but said there was no need for a DNA test.

'At the time we thought that was a victory but now I realize it wasn't, because no DNA test was done to prove it absolutely.

'He didn't want to be a father to me when I was a kid. Now I think I understand he couldn't be a father to me because his own father had been absent when he was growing up.'
