Bald and bearded David Letterman breaks a sweat in tropical paradise of St Barts before taking a spin in his beach buggy

He ended his 33-year career last May.

And David Letterman is clearly enjoying his retirement as he sported a bald and bearded look in the tropical paradise of St Barts on Friday.

The 68-year-old former host of The Late Show broke a sweat on a power walk before heading back to his beach buggy for a cruise around town.

The CBS favourite - who is worth an estimated $400 million - listened on his portable media player as he donned casual workout gear.

He wore navy blue gym shorts with white stripes, a Deep Creek Ranch tee and white trainers with bright red laces.

After the longest-serving late night talk show host in American television history tired out, he made his way back to the small red cruiser.

Letterman popped on a pair of shades and relaxed as he sat behind the wheel of the Mini Moke off-road vehicle.

The veteran host recently said he has not looked back since passing the Late Show baton on to its current incumbent, the struggling Stephen Colbert.

He said: 'I thought I would have some trouble, some emotional trouble, or some feeling of displacement, but I realized, hey, that’s not my problem anymore.

'And I have felt much better. It’s something for younger men and women to take on.'

'I’ll be 69 next year and I’ve been doing this for 33 years. What did I want? Like you work until you’re a hundred? So there’s a lot of practical reasons why a person wouldn’t miss this.'

The comedian admitted that while presenting the show he did not realise just how insignificant his job really was, an impression no doubt reinforced by his revolving door of self-important celebrities.

David said: 'And because of this introspection, you believe that what you are doing is of great importance and that it is affecting mankind wall-to-wall.'

'And then when you get out of it you realize, oh, well, that wasn’t true at all,' he continued, laughing.

'It was just silliness. And when that occurred to me, I felt so much better and I realized, geez, I don’t think I care that much about television anymore.'

'I feel foolish for having been misguided by my own ego for so many years.'
