Free to mingle! Kesha enjoys an evening out among friends after her legal battle picks up speed with an appeal

Her legal battle picked up speed this week after her lawyers appealed a judge's decision not to release her from her contract with Dr. Luke.

Kesha took a well-deserved break from the drama and spent some time for herself in Los Angeles on Friday.

The 29-year-old singer surrounded herself with a group of friends and enjoyed a bit of retail therapy.

She wore a black T-shirt by the punk rock band Misfits paired with matching distressed skinny jeans which were ripped along the front.

Her voluminous blonde locks - tipped with a darkening gradient of blue - fell in loose waves past her shoulders.

Kesha seemed in deep conversation and appeared in decent spirits as her legal battle with Sony and Dr Luke drags on.

On Monday, Kesha's legal team filed paperwork to appeal the judge's decision to withhold the contract with Dr Luke, real name Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald.

'First, the Court erred in basing its decision on its finding that Kesha could record without interference from Gottwald,' the papers stated, according to Billboard.

'Although it recognized that "slavery was done away with a long time ago" and that "[y]ou can't force someone to work... . in a situation in which they don't want to work," the Court's ruling requiring Kesha to work for Gottwald's companies, purportedly without his involvement, does just that.'

On Friday, fans of the pop star called on the record label to cut ties with the producer she has accused of raping her.

Dozens arrived at Sony's Manhattan headquarters to deliver petitions with more than 411,000 signatures demanding they release the singer, and drop Dr Luke - real name Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald - while they're at it.

Armed with 'Free Kesha Now' signs, the group chanted 'Do the right thing!' and 'People over profits!' as they danced to Kesha's songs.

The hour-long rally came a month after a Manhattan judge denied the pop star's initial request to be released from her contract.

The hearing led to an outpouring of support from celebrities, including Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.

Meanwhile, Dr Luke vehemently denies the accusations, claiming Kesha fabricated her story about being drugged and raped a decade ago to get out of her recording contract.
