The normally brunette actress - who stripped off for her role in The Look Of Love - revealed she had no issue showing her topless body on screen as she explained that her nipples were originally meant to be ‘erased’ in one scene.

According to The Sun, Anna said: ‘It said, “erase nipple”. I was like, “How are you going to erase my nipple?’ I think I would have rather shown it than be nipple-less!”

However Anna had just flashed more flesh than planned and editors were planning to use more steam to help protect her modesty.

The talent actress - who has also starred in Pushing Daises, Limitless and Emmerdale – plays Marcella, who is persuaded to return to work when the police believe a serial killer who she failed to catch 10 years ago has returned.

Anna also revealed that none of the cast – including Downton’s Laura Carmichael – were told the identity of the murderer until they started filming the final scenes.

Anna said: ‘None of us knew. “We did take bets – I didn’t get it right!’

In November, it was revealed that the actress was starring in the crime drama written by renowned screenwriter and novelist Hans Rosenfeldt and directed by 'Skins' Charles Martin.

At the time, she said: ‘I'm thrilled to be working on Hans Rosenfeldt's first English drama. Scandinavian storytelling is hugely inspiring but we Brits usually have to settle for doing a remake, so to be working with Hans on an original piece for ITV is a true privelege.

Make waves in Anna's heels by Nicholas Kirkwood

She might be revealing all for her role in new crime drama Marcella, but we prefer Anna Friel fully clothed. We love stealing her style!

The actress is pictured here at the BFI Luminous Gala dinner in London late last year, wearing a quirky tailored look with these instantly recognizable shoes. They're by Nicholas Kirkwood and we're head over heels in love with the glitter and mesh wave design. What a way to make an entrance!

Having created shoes for models to walk the runway at the likes of Ghost, Erdem, Peter Pilotto and Rodarte, British shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood also counts Cate Blanchett, Cara Delevingne and Claudia Schiffer as some of his well-heeled clients. So you'll be keeping good company if you click (right) to buy a similar version of Anna's sharply pointed shoes at Net-a-Porter!

Or take a look at the best of the rest in our edit below. Dune's suede courts could definitely pass for designer!

‘Marcella is a complex woman and a wonderful layered character. Hans' marvellous scripts have drawn a fantastic cast and crew together. I can't wait to begin.’

Each hour-long episode will lead the audience through a narrative maze where any character could be a witness, victim or potential suspect.

After her husband Jason (Pinnock) leaves her after confessing he no longer loves her, Marcella returns to the Met's Murder Squad ten years after giving up her career to look after her family.

And she soon finds herself focused on a serial murder case that bares a striking resemblance to a spate of unsolved murders from a decade ago.
