Why Manchester United need ‘The Special One’ to compete with City

Jose Mourinho could well be the perfect man to help Manchester United compete with the Pep Guardiola overhaul that is set to take place at the Etihad next season.
With heightened speculation regarding talks between Mourinho and Ed Woodward this week, you’d be hard pressed to find a better man to help reinstate Manchester United as a top European outfit once again.
The Portuguese coach has never spent more than three years as the boss in any one job, however his record speaks for itself in terms of trophies and win ratio, having success at every club he’s ever worked for.
The 53 year-old’s second spell as Chelsea boss ended in December, when he was sacked after losing nine of the first 16 league games of the season.
The decision by Roman Abramovich and the powers that be in South London came just seven months after winning his third Premier League title with the club. Given his passionate ties and great success with the blues spanning over two terms in charge, it was both a sharp and blunt decision on the board’s part.
But with Louis Van Gaal struggling to win over the Old Trafford faithful with his style of play or results, it seems a new and surprising era could be just around the corner for Manchester United, the era of ‘The Special One’.
The Red Devils desperately need a lift, a spark from somewhere, and there’s no doubting that Jose Mourinho would liven the place up and show no remorse in axing star names that are underperforming if necessary.
With The Citizens appointment of his not so secret enemy Guardiola, the job will now be a challenge that Mourinho himself would relish, if only to get one over his great old rival.
If Woodward gets his man, it will renew a bitter rivalry sparked in Spain. Their clashes when the respective coaches at Real Madrid and Barcelona became a global spectacle, elevating an already compelling fixture into a galactic-sized battle of super egos.
Although this particular move may be viewed as a panic appointment following City’s Guardiola announcement, there is no doubting he brings stature, results and would know better than anyone how to counteract Peps strategies, as he showed at Madrid and Inter Milan.
What is for certain is that Mourinho brings a lot of coverage to whichever club he ends up at, both good and bad. But like him or loathe him he is still the crème de la crème of footballing manager.
Don’t be too surprised to see him at the Old Trafford Helm come August 13th for the kick off of the new season, especially if Van Gaal fails to lead the side to Champions League qualification, Pep Vs. Jose would sure make for one of the most mouth-watering Manchester derbies in years, wouldn’t it?
