Adrien Broner's achievements in boxing could be overshadowed by controversy and drama outside of the ring

  • Adrien Broner, 26, allegedly knocked a man unconscious and robbed him in Cincinnati in January
  • It is the latest unsavoury episode in a career filled with controversy
  • The legacy of the four-weight world champion could be marred by problems out the ring

Adrien Broner, the four-weight world champion, is scheduled to fight Britain's Ashley Theophane in Washington DC on April 1 - but the fight is in jeopardy after police issued an arrest warrant for the American over an alleged assault and robbery in his hometown of Cincinnati.

It is another unsavoury chapter in the career of the man who loudly declares himself the flamboyant heir to Floyd Mayweather, the undefeated all-time great who Broner calls his 'Big Bro'.

After some dazzling early promise it appears distractions and bad choices outside the ring are taking their toll on Broner's career.

Here are some of the self-inflicted dramas which threaten to curtail the 26-year-old's undoubted ability and potential.

Flushing money down toilet

Broner has been keen to push the nickname 'About Billions' and showed off his wealth by tearing up a wad of $20 bills and flushing them down the toilet in 2013.

He was an undefeated, highly-rated 23-year-old prospect at the time and was keen to court as much controversy as possible.

Later that year he was also involved in a 'sex tape' scandal, which resulted in one of the women in the video suing him, according to BoxingScene.com.

Gesture to Marcos Maidana

After a controversy-filled year, many fans were delighted when in December 2013 he was beaten by heavy-hitting, no-nonsense Argentine Marcos Maidana, an old-school pressure fighter who does his talking in the ring.

During the Maidana fight, in which Broner was dropped twice and lost via unanimous decision, he angered viewers by simulating a 'humping' motion behind the Argentine at the end of round one.

He got his comeuppance when he was floored at the start of the second round by a powerful left hand, but to many fans it illustrated a lack of respect for his opponent.

Maidana mockingly returned the gesture when he was winning comfortably in the later rounds.

Paulie Malignaggi trash talking

Prior to his first professional loss at the hands of Maidana, Broner made history by jumping up two weight classes and defeating Paulie Malignaggi, via split decision, for the WBA welterweight belt.

It was a bold move that illustrated Broner's iron-willed self-belief and the win in New York earned him a world title in his third weight class at the age of just 23.

'He's a world class fighter,' Broner said. 'To come to somebody's hometown and beat them on a split decision, that's saying something.'

The impressive achievement, however, was marred by the trash talking - from both sides - leading up to the fight.

It strayed into a personal slanging match and they dragged girlfriends and ex-girlfriends into the melee, with Broner saying in the ring after the fight: 'I'm good. I beat Paulie, I left with his belt and his girl.'

Malignaggi reacted badly to the insult and it was not an edifying post-fight scene.

Walmart video

Earlier this month Broner shared a video of him throwing his change in the air at the front of a queue in Walmart. 'I'm AB, I don't need no change,' he says.

It led to another fall-out with Floyd Mayweather.

Broner was lining himself up as the heir to Mayweather's throne, but the loss to Maidana - and the more recent defeat by Shawn Porter in June last year - derailed his ambition of remaining undefeated.

The pair have repeatedly clashed and Mayweather said after the Walmart video: 'It kind of hurt my feelings. The person gave him his change back, I guess he had bought something and he threw the money or the change up in the air like, 'Why are you giving me change back? You don't know who I am?'

'Actually, a lot of people in the store didn't know who he was... he's still young and he's still learning, but before you know it, it's going to be too late.'

Assault and robbery

Broner allegedly knocked a man unconscious and robbed him outside a bowling alley on January 21, according to a report in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

They say police have issued a warrant for his arrest.

If the allegations are true it would be the most serious - and depressing - chapter in a career which promised to shine so brightly, but has so often been sullied by controversy.
